Down Goes LMU

Women’s Swim takes down LMU in home dual meet for their third victory against a NCAA Division I opponent this season.

March 05, 2021

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola women's swim team continues to pose a threat to NCAA Division I opponents as they defeated LMU with a score of 144-92 on Friday at Lasing Pool. For the third time this season the Eagles have taken down a Division I opponent (CBU, Cal Poly).

The Eagles won eight of the 10 events, missing out only on the 50-butterfly and 50-backstroke  which were won by LMU's Abby Shaw and Heidi Ly, respectively.

Biola had two of the top-three performers in seven of ten events, just missing out on the 50-butterfly, 25-freestyle and 50-breaststroke. The Eagles swept the top-four finishes in the 100-freestyle lead by Koyla Vos (:54.66).

Vos was a standout for the Eagles, finishing first in five individual events (200-25-500-100-50-freestyle) and clinching a team win alongside 200-freestyle teammates Meredyth Rubie, Liza Parahnevich and Kasidee Pascoe (1:41.34) to end the day for the Eagles. Vos earned a total of 35 points for BU.

It wasn't only Vos who had a strong day in the pool. Liza Paranevich had five top-two finishes of her own, including taking first in the 200-freestyle relay. Parahnevich scored a total of 17 points for the Eagles, individually. She was the runner-up in the 200-500-100-50 freestyle races.

Anna Haaksma notched four top-three finishes, taking first place in the 200-IM, second place in the 50-breaststroke and third place in the 50-backstroke and 200-freestyle relay. Haaksma contributed to BU's dominating win with 16 individual points, she was the runner-up (and Biola's top finisher) for the medley pentathlon.

The event was structured as a pentathlon, allowing each swimmer to participate in five individual events each. They could choose the freestyle events, like Vos, or the strokes (50y of each), like LMU's Ly and Haaksma.

Vos won the freestyle pentathlon with a combined time of 8:46.01, leading a group of three Biolans up top (Parahnevich, Katelyn Harper). Ly led all swimmers in the medley pentathlon with a 4:08.90. Anna Haaksma was Biola's top medley pentathlon finisher, coming in second.

The closest races of the day were the 25-freestyle, 200-IM and 50-freestyle with the runner-up being 0:00.11 behind the event winner in each event.

Next up for the Eagles is a recently-added dual meet at Pepperdine on March 13 . This gives the Eagles one last chance to fine tune their performances before they head to the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.

The women will go into the meet 6-0 on the season with hopes of making it 7-0, including a 4-0 mark against NCAA Division I competition.
