BU Secures Sweep

Six runs was once again enough for Biola, as the host squad defeated No. 8 CUI in game two on Wednesday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A Wednesday night doubleheader between the hosting Biola Eagles and the eighth-ranked Concordia Eagles resulted in a two-game sweep for BU. For the second time, Biola piled on six runs, as the squad collected a 6-4 victory in game two.

Consistency was key for the Biola offense in the crucial win. Runs came in from the BU lineup in four-of-six innings at the plate.

BU's big rally came in the fourth inning, beginning with fantastic baserunning by Alexis Lara. The pinch runner moved from first to third on two passed balls, before drawing two throws on potential groundouts causing the BU hitters to reach safely and for her to score soundly. Kylie Velasco capped off the frame with a two-RBI triple down the right field line.

Brie Nowak brought the firepower from the fifth spot in the lineup, logging two hits for her third multi-hit effort this season. The freshman also added a double in the second frame, increasing her total to four in 2021.

Head coach Nikki Udria was not only impressed with Nowak's bat but also her performance at catcher, "She had phenomenal blocks behind the plate and she was able to throw that runner out (in the third inning). I really see her stepping into her role really well."

BU pitcher Raylene Roybal drew the start in game two, logging 4.0 innings with a season-high five strikeouts. The sophomore picked up her fifth win of the season, while refusing to allow an earned run.

"Our pitching staff did really well today and it was cool to see Paige want the ball at the end, especially how game one ended," added Udria.

The star of game one for BU, Paige Austin, dealt a gem from the circle but had one blemish, a solo homer given up to Concordia's cleanup hitter, Nemeth, in the seventh inning. As game two neared its end, Nemeth came to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs and CUI trailing 6-4.

Austin wanted the ball in her hand for the final out and stepped into the circle for the duel. The BU pitcher did not mess around, tossing three-straight strikes for the third and final out, sealing the win for Biola.

Biola improved its record to 13-9 overall and 8-6 in the PacWest, moving the team into first place in the SoCal pod. The BU squad will face off against Concordia on the road in their next matchup on Saturday.
