Biola Takes Down No. 8 CUI

The BU softball squad exploded in the fifth for six runs, leading to a victory over No. 8 Concordia.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A pitching duel came to an end in the fifth inning, as Biola won the game off a six-run rally. The big inning helped BU win game one of the Wednesday doubleheader with No. 8 CUI, 6-1.

Both teams threw its aces in the circle to open the day, leading to a quiet few innings to start the matchup. Reigning PacWest Pitcher of the Week, Paige Austin, strutted her stuff for Biola, keeping Concordia scoreless for a 0-0 score heading into the fifth frame.

The game shifted off the bat of Ruth Munoz, who brought home the go-ahead run. The shortstop reached on an error from the CUI second baseman, allowing Kylie Velasco to round third and touch home plate.

The rally would continue with a Jennifer Morinishi double to deep right center field. The extra base hit added a pair of runs for BU with only one out in the inning.

Madison Blossey followed Morinishi with a bunt for a single, placing runners on first and third. Kayla Neff put an exclamation mark on the inning with a three-run blast over the left field fence, completing the six-run outburst for Biola.

Austin completed the game for her seventh win of the season, logging nine strikeouts and one run allowed. The righty continued her dominant 2021 campaign, averaging over one strikeout per inning through her previous eight outings. The visiting CUI Eagles struggled to get any movement on the bases with only one runner touching second base in the contest.

Neff showed off her power with her second long ball of the season, tacking on three runs for BU. The senior knocked the first homer for BU at Freedom Field, while remaining the only Eagle with a home run this year.

Velasco and Allie Beck provided an offensive charge from the eighth and ninth spots in the BU lineup. The duo sparked rallies in the third and fifth innings, as the two players went a combined three-for-five at the plate with two runs scored. The freshman, Beck, notched her first multi-hit effort with two singles, while extending her hitting streak to three games.
