Pitching Wins the Day for BU

The Eagles swept Azusa Pacific on Friday, giving up just two runs throughout the doubleheader.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The BU softball squad collected its second doubleheader sweep of the season, while picking up its third-straight victory by defeating Azusa Pacific in back-to-back contests. The Friday doubleheader was defined by excellent Biola pitching, as the visiting Eagles won 4-2 in game one and 3-0 in game two.

Raylene Roybal and Jennifer Morinishi tag-teamed for the low-scoring outing in the opening game of the day. Roybal fought through adversity to limit the damage through 3.2 innings of work, holding Cougar hitters to a .167 batting average with runners in scoring position.

The Eagles cut down on their early deficit in the second frame, as the Nowaks joined forces for a run. Brie Nowak got things started with a walk, before moving to third base by way of a sacrifice bunt from Roybal and a passed ball. Pinch runner, Maddie Riley, touched home with an RBI groundout by Abie Nowak.

From the bottom of the second inning through the end of the sixth, both teams remained quiet offensively.

Brie Nowak interrupted the calm with a double to lead off the seventh with Biola still trailing, 2-1. Kylie Velasco maintained the momentum with a single to left field, putting the tying run on third base with no outs. The game drew even at two, as Abie Nowak placed another ground ball on the right side of the infield to score the game-tying run.

The inning did not stop there, as Rilee Ruvalcaba stepped up with a single back up the middle. With Velasco looking to score from second, she took a wide turn towards home but retreated back to third. The hard baserunning baited a wild throw from the catcher that sent the ball into the outfield. The error allowed both Velasco and Ruvalcaba to score for a 4-2 Biola lead.

Morinishi brought the game to a close with stellar pitching in the circle. The lefty notched the final 10 outs of the contest for her first win of the season.

Paige Austin was the star of game two, logging a one-hitter in a shutout performance. The standout pitcher had the Cougar batters confused, drawing 12 strikeouts, while allowing two hits into the outfield with one being a flyout.

The senior extended her streak of double-digit strikeouts to four-straight in a starting effort. Austin also picked up her second shutout in her last three starts.

A third inning outburst from the BU offense was all the team needed for the 3-0 triumph.

Velasco posted the first run of the game, after a leadoff triple down the right field line. Brie Nowak brought home the next two with a two-out double, scoring Kayla Neff and Madison Blossey.

The back half of the lineup carried the torch for the Eagles on the day. Throughout the doubleheader, hitters five through nine in the lineup boasted a combined nine hits for a .360 batting average.

Biola (11-9, 6-6 PacWest) will return to Freedom Field for its next contest, taking on Concordia on Wednesday.
