Eagles Split Wednesday Doubleheader

Biola salvaged a split on Wednesday, taking game two against Azusa Pacific.

AZUSA, Calif. --- The BU softball squad saw a pair of close-knit games on the road against Azusa Pacific on Wednesday. The Cougars nabbed game one, 3-2, before Biola took the second contest, 4-2.

Rallies in the second and fifth frames carried the Eagles for their win in game two. Both scoring outputs resulted in two runs for BU, giving them four total in the competition.

Abie Nowak put Biola on the scoreboard in the second inning, hitting a single through the right side of the infield. The base hit brought home Haley Martinez for an RBI, while also helping Raylene Roybal come around to the plate with the help of an APU throwing error.

The fifth inning rally was ignited by a single from Ruth Munoz, followed by a fielding error to put runners on first and second for BU. Kayla Neff stepped up by smacking the first pitch she saw right back up the middle and into centerfield, scoring Munoz. Brie Nowak notched back-to-back hits for Biola, giving the team a 4-0 lead by bringing home Blossey.

Paige Austin secured the victory from the circle, logging a complete game. For the third-straight game, the pitcher tallied 10 strikeouts in a starting effort. Austin was untouchable from the second through fourth frames, picking up seven strikeouts through the three perfect innings.

The Cougars mounted a comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh, fighting to add two runs to force extra innings. The host squad placed the potential go-ahead run on first base by loading the bases with two outs.

Austin responded with her most crucial strikeout of the night, catching the APU batter looking at strike three. The final out marked the end to a 4-2 BU win.

Game one of the doubleheader was defined by a big offensive inning from each team. The Cougars posted more runs in their offensive surge to win 3-2.

BU found success in the fifth frame, compiling a pair of runs. Abie Nowak led off with her first double of the season, sparking the BU rally. Fielding mistakes from APU helped BU notch its first run of the contest, as pinch runner Maddie Riley touched home plate. Jennifer Morinishi picked up the second RBI, laying down a sacrifice bunt to bring Biola within one run at 3-2.

In the sixth and seventh innings, the Eagles placed runners on second base with no outs, attempting to even the game at three runs apiece. Each opportunity fell short, as Azusa Pacific offered the necessary defensive plays to end the offensive efforts.

Abie Nowak had herself a day, collecting her first multi-hit effort with three base hits in game one. The freshman added an extra-base hit, while going four-for-five throughout both contests.

Biola (9-9, 4-6 PacWest) is slated for another road doubleheader at Azusa Pacific (10-6, 5-5 PacWest) on Friday.
