BU Edged by Metro State

A back and forth afternoon fell the way of Metro State, as the visitors overcame Biola by a 4-3 final score.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A sunny and warm Tuesday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center called for a tight competition between the Metro State Roadrunners and the Biola Eagles. The match came down to the final singles contest with MSU ultimately taking the match, 4-3.

Throughout the day, neither team garnered more than a one-point lead. The first advantage of the match belonged to the visitors, who grabbed the first two doubles matches for a 1-0 lead.

Helping regain some momentum before moving into the singles matches, Erik Martinez and Sebastian Herrera eked out a 7-6 triumph in the No. 3 spot. The duo came up clutch in the tiebreaker to seven points, winning 7-5. With the win, Martinez remained perfect in doubles on the season with an 8-0 overall record.

Alexei Prokopchuk evened the match with a quick victory from the No. 1 spot in singles. The sophomore won his fourth-consecutive singles match, while improving his record on the season to 5-2.

A second straight-sets triumph for BU came in from Isaac Cordova on court No. 4. The freshman posted back-to-back 6-4 sets to give Biola its first lead of the day at 2-1.

MSU responded with a pair of narrow wins to retake the lead. Despite winning both contests in straight-sets, the Roadrunners needed an extra game in the second set of both matches.

The final two matches of the afternoon went the distance, creating an exciting end to the day. From the No. 2 spot, Herrera battled back after dropping the first set. The righty took control late in the contest, notching three straight games to give BU its third point of the match.

Knotted at three points, BU and Metro State each needed the final match to go its way to win the day. In the third and final set, the Roadrunners pulled out the 6-3 win and ultimately the match victory.

Herrera maintained his perfect 2021 record with his fourth singles win. The sophomore collected his second win from the No. 2 spot on Tuesday.

The Eagles will return to the court on Thursday on the road against Westmont.
