Penguins Draw Saturday Split with Eagles

Dominican won a defensive battle in game two on Saturday, splitting the day with Biola.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Neither team found much success on offense in the final game of Saturday's doubleheader. A two-RBI double from the Penguins (7-5) made the difference in the contest, as the visitors upset Biola, 2-1.

The Eagles outhit Dominican in the contest, 6-5, but came up one run short for the loss. Brie Nowak provided a bright spot in the lineup, grabbing two hits and the only run scored.

Nowak instigated the BU attack in the second inning, leading off with a double that landed at the base of the fence in deep left field. The freshman's first career extra-base hit allowed Kylie Velasco to bunt her over to third base with just one down in the frame. Kylee Messmer picked up the RBI, driving a single through the left side of the infield.

DUC responded in the top of the third, stringing together a rally that would give them a pair of runs and a 2-1 lead.

Fantastic defensive plays from the Eagles limited the damage. Madison Blossey ended the Penguin rally in the third with a diving grab in shallow center field. The catch saved two potential DUC runs from crossing home plate.

Not to be outdone, Allie Beck offered a highlight play of her own. The right fielder sprinted in on a short fly ball and laid out for the impressive catch.

Jennifer Morinishi was stellar in a relief effort, hurling 4.2 innings for the Eagles. The sophomore struck out three Penguins in the outing, while allowing only one hit.

Biola (8-8) will now turn its attention to its next matchup set for Wednesday at Azusa Pacific.
