Eagles Fall to Sea Lions

Biola Women’s Tennis returns from Point Loma after a hard fought defeat

POINT LOMA, Calif. --- Following a victory on their home courts on Friday, Biola was unable to match the results against Point Loma as they headed south for Saturday's contest. The Eagles suffered their second loss of the season at the hands of the Sea Lions, 3-4.

Biola was off to a strong start as Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia secured a doubles victory for the Eagles in the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 Brooke Fager and Lilly McNeill put up a hard fought loss as Point Loma's Faith Pearson and Samantha Neilson took the match. Those two flights had mirroring 6-4 scorelines, which put the doubles point at the mercy of the No. 3 matchup.

The deciding doubles match featured Biola's Amelia Kitts and Gaby Carvajal. The doubles partners were able to outscore their opponents 7-3 in a tiebreaker to earn Biola the doubles point and give the Eagles an advantage early on.

Singles competition opened up with a quick victory from Point Loma's Thelma Sepulveda at the No. 3 spot, quickly tightening the match to 1-1. PLNU would pull ahead 2-1 following a straight-set win at the No. 4 spot.

Mary Brascia then secured a singles victory out of the No. 5 spot in the back-and-forth battle against Point Loma's Rachel Whittington. Brascia took set one 6-4 and set two 6-3. This had the match once again tied at 2-2.

Ines Diaz and Gabi Armas had a classic battle at the No. 6 flight, which turned out to be one of the deciding final three singles matches in progress. Diaz would fall in straight sets, but by the narrowest of margins in both sets (4-6; 5-7).

Emery's No. 1 court was the next to finish with the All-American sophomore earning a gritty three-set win (6-1; 5-7; 5-4) to bring everything back even at 3-3 overall.

That turned all eyes on court No. 2, which would decide everything in this one. After countless battles between Brooke Fager and Amanda Letzring, Point Loma would go on to win out the day giving the Sea Lions the 4-3 victory.

The loss draws Biola even to a 2-2 overall record on the season. Biola Women's Tennis continues their season with the second of the next four road matches on Feb. 27 at California Lutheran.
