Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Biola Falls To Ranked Eagles

Concordia Irvine wins a tight doubles point before taking the match, 4-1.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the first time this year the Biola Tennis Center played host to a ranked opponent. Additionally, for the first time this year the Biola Tennis Center saw a bit of BU disappointment. The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of No. 25 Concordia Irvine, 4-1.

The top two flights of doubles were as competitive as you'd expect against these two PacWest Conference rivals. The top spot took an extra game before CUI's Ghazal Pakbaten and Rebekah Anderson were able to hand Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia their first upset of the year. That match is the one that clinched the doubles in favor of CUI to get things off to a thrilling start at the BTC.

At No. 2 it was a back-and-forth battle between Brooke Fager & Lilly McNeill and CUI's Tiffany Carrillo and Taylor Lau. Fager and McNeill upped their record to 2-0 with their second 6-4 victory of the young season.

The doubles point was decided in favor of the visitors, though, thanks to a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.

Biola's lone match win came courtesy Lilly McNeill in singles. McNeill dominated at the No. 4 spot en route to a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set victory. McNeill is undefeated all around this year. She's only lost a single game in singles play.

The No. 1 matchup was full of fire as Emery and Pakbaten, two of the conference's best went toe-to-toe. They split the first two games (6-4, 4-6) and were just about to start what surely would have been a phenomenal third set when Concordia got the clinch.

Mary Brascia also had to work a little extra in singles, playing three sets before falling (3-6, 6-4, 4-6) at the No. 5 spot.

The loss drops Biola to 1-1 overall, while the visiting Eagles improve to 2-1 on their season. Next up for BU is a home match against Westmont on Friday.
