Season Sweep

The battle of the Eagles was won by Biola on Thursday night, marking a season sweep of CUI.

LA MIRADA --- Biola (10-4, 6-1 PW) flexed on its opponent on Thursday, piling on five goals in a decisive 5-2 victory. For the second time this season, BU took down Concordia (5-6-2, 3-2-1 PW), extending the team's winning streak to five matches.

For the first time since 1987, the BU Eagles tallied five goals against CUI. Biola never let up on the gas pedal to tack on its sixth conference win to sit atop the PacWest, tied with Point Loma.

The scoring began soon after the opening kickoff. A breakaway tally from Daniel Simonis provided the first goal of the contest with the help of Aidan Hill, who notched the assist.

Concordia responded in the 17th minute to tie the match at one goal apiece. A throw-in bounced around the box before Willy Ospina launched a volley to the upper right 90 to put the visitors on the scoreboard.

A throw-in for Biola put the host squad in position to retake the lead in the 22nd minute. Defender Lawrence Kwazema tossed the ball into the box and right to the head of fellow defender Izaac Zausch. The deflection from the header guided the ball on a line drive right into the net for a 2-1 lead.

As the first half began to come to a close it looked like both teams were content letting the final seconds tick without much ado. On the contrary, with just over 30 seconds before the halftime break, BU keeper JD Gunn booted the ball to the opposite side of the field. The two centerbacks for Concordia fumbled the ball backwards towards their own goal. Adam Jones was ready for the mishap and beat the goalie for goal number three for Biola.

Biola's leading goal scorer has a knack of finding the right place to be, as he knocked in his fifth goal of the season.

Concordia refused to go quietly, notching the first goal of the second half. The visiting offense was determined to make an impact on the scoreboard but was inefficient with 23 shots and only two goals.

The match remained tightly contested for the next 18 minutes, as Biola clung to a 3-2 lead.

Separation came in the 71st minute, as Hill provided a highlight reel shot. The reigning All-PacWest midfielder turned around and fired a shot to the left upper 90 from nearly 25 yards out. The insurance score gave BU a bit of breathing room at 4-2.

The two score lead was not enough for the Eagles, as they looked for more. Once again, a BU goal began with a Gunn high-arching pass from the box. Jones quickly dispossessed the CUI defender who initially corralled the ball. Jones then nudged the ball over to Simonis who sprinted by the defense. For the second time on Thursday, Simonis beat the keeper, doubling his season total to four goals.

Jonathan Serrano was a man on a mission in the midfield for the Eagles. The senior dictated the possession of the ball throughout the night and added an assist in the win.

Gunn tallied the win in goal for BU, improving his season record to 7-2. Eight saves from the Panama City, Panama native matched his career-best for a single match.

BU will look to continue to roll with another conference match against Holy Names at Al Barbour Field next Thursday at 7:00 pm.
