Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Eagles Close Road Trip With Solid Play

Biola sees an uptick in scoring this weekend against top sides.

SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Biola Men's Water Polo closed out a busy weekend with some Sunday success against a pair of top-12 opponents at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.

The Eagles had two strong showings against top-notch NCAA Division I competition, beginning with a morning meeting with No. 12 Princeton. The Tigers used nine goals in the first half to build a big lead against coach Rick Nordell's bunch and then held on in the second half to walk away victorious by a final score of 15-5.

The second stanza of the Sunday play was Biola vs. No. 10 San Jose State. The Eagles managed to find the twine one more time in a 17-6 losing effort against the Spartans.

Both contests were encouraging for coach Nordell as they managed to show some spark on offense against some of the best teams in the country.

The highlight of the game against Princeton was four second-half scores from the Eagles' attack. After being held to a single Maxwell Osborn score in the first half, Biola scored twice in the third and twice in the fourth to begin to regain its form.

The four second-half goals came from Matthew Vinson, Brett Hanke, Riley Bagley and Jackson Sumwalt. It was the first countable goal of the Biola career for Bagley, Sumwalt and Hanke.

"Our guys played well as a team, and lots of guys contributed to our overall performance," said Nordell.

The momentum built at the end of the Princeton contest continued into the afternoon as the Eagles put up three goals in the first period against the SJSU Spartans. Two of those three goals came in the final 15 seconds of the first period as Kenny Wulf found the twine on a power play chance and then Osborn piled in a buzzer-beater at the end of the period.

The rest of that match was a bit of a showcase for the SJSU offense as they scored three goals in the second and fourth and had a five-goal effort in the third. The 17 scores in this game was an increase from the average of 12 per-game season average.

Part of their increase in scoring was an increase in 6-on-5 opportunities. This was the only match on the weekend where Biola was called for more exclusions than their opponent.

The Eagles are back home this week for their final home match of this inaugural season. Biola hosts WWPA foe Concordia Irvine at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at SPLASH!.
