Eagles Earn Speedy Sweep

Biola Men’s Tennis defeated Westmont with a clean 7-0 sweep at the Biola Tennis Center on Tuesday.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Last year the story was Biola Men's Tennis beating Westmont for the first time in over 12 years. On Tuesday, the Eagles made that drought seem like a distant memory with a punctual 7-0 sweep of the Warriors at the Biola Tennis Center.

Although the official match time was listed at about two hours, the Eagles only really needed about an hour and a half to put the Warriors away. Head Coach David Goodman's three doubles pairs grabbed the opening point of the match while the women's teams were still deciding the last singles matches. And then Derek James, Alexei Prokopchuk and Edwyn Ramos made quick work of their singles opponents while dropping two games or fewer in their straight set wins to clinch.

Ramos was also part of the first doubles pair to finish, earning a 6-1 win with Quentin Lau. Prokopchuk and James were closing to handshakes on their court with a 5-3 score, but Logan Blair and Andres Meneses took care of Biola's second doubles win at the No. 2 line by a 6-2 score about three minutes after Ramos and Lau walked off.

James looked as unbeatable at the BTC as he was in 2019 during his victory, winning games and winning them quickly to be the first man done with his work for the evening. Prokopchuk just overpowered his opponent with an all out attack on his first serve and at the baseline. And Ramos also forced his opponent to hit the majority of his shots off balance and beyond the baseline as he won his second-straight singles fixture against Westmont.

But give the Eagles credit for still trying to finish strong after the match was settled. Logan Blair closed very well in both of his sets and came back from an early deficit in the first to win 6-4, 6-4 on court three. Andres Meneses used the momentum of a win in a back-and-forth first set to break his opponent twice in the second set for a 6-4, 6-2 score. Then Quentin Lau won the last four points of his superbreaker (10-7) after he won his first set 6-0 to wrap up Biola'a 7-0 win at the end of the dual match.

That four-point run started with a masterful bit of defensive tennis from Lau that saw his race from the net back to the baseline to retrieve an overhead lob. Lau then returned three more shots from the baseline before his opponent hit a forehand wide right for an unforced error.

Biola Men's Tennis now has a three-match winning streak dating back to the end of last year's PacWest tournament and its win over Holy Names. That mark ties the Eagles' longest winning streak over the past four years and will be put to the test at the end of the week when Biola hosts UC San Diego at the BTC.

First serve with the Tritons is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
