Strong At The Top

Biola Women’s Tennis bests Stanislaus State with wins from its top two doubles pairs and top three singles players.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Tennis was rewarded for its sense of urgency on Saturday. Head Coach David Goodman's group hosted another conference peer in Stanislaus State less than a day after earning a big 7-0 win over Holy Names University and came up with its fourth win in a row thanks to victories at the top of the lineup.

The Eagles defeated the Warriors 4-3 after earning wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. Biola clinched the match at 4-1 after Colbeyshae Emery wrapped up her match in straight-sets and its good that BU did. Stanislaus State fought with an edge on the far singles courts, regardless of the score, and might have done the same on the near courts had not the Eagles buckled down.

The Warriors introduced the Biola Tennis Center to their dogged determination on doubles court three, where play continued a full 30 minutes after the home team had clinched the dual's opening point at flights one and two.

Emery and Brooke Fager played ahead from the start of their match and won 6-3. But the biggest victory, and perhaps the biggest victory of all the doubles matches the Eagles have played so far this season, came from the duo of Lauren Lee and Faith Grisham on court two.

Lee and Grisham won six games in a row with winner after winner at the net to race to their second-straight win as a team. Lee was dependable as ever from the baseline while Grisham showed great hands at the net and volleyed multiple ground-strokes hit directly at her for winners.

Then, with the doubles point in hand, the Eagles did a great job staying sharp coming out of the lengthy delay caused by the third doubles match. Ines Diaz dictated the play and emotions of her match to deliver the most resounding win of her collegiate career, 6-2, 6-0. The Spaniard's forehand was just incredible as she hit a number of cross-court and inside-out forehands for winners throughout the match.

Fager also took a long stretch of games in a row to close out sets in her 6-3, 6-3 win. The freshman employed a few important drop shots for the winner during her second set as she won four games in a row to give Biola its third point while Emery was within a game of clinching.

Emery's 6-4, 6-3 win was her seventh in a row at the No. 1 flight and her fourth-consecutive straight-sets victory.

The Eagles had their chances at wins on four and five as well. Lauren Lee won three games in a row in her first set to take in 7-5 and got seven points in her superbreaker to conclude the match. Allison Torres worked hard to stay focused in her match and pushed her second set to 5-5 before its conclusion.

The Eagles will head to San Diego on Sunday to prepare for their next two matches. First on the docket is a meeting with Point Loma on Monday at 4 p.m.
