Eagles Take Quick Finish

Biola Women’s Tennis uses singles victories to earn a 5-4 comeback victory over Redlands.

REDLANDS, Calif. --- Compared to the long-form matches that Biola Women's Tennis has become accustomed to of late, Friday's match at University of Redlands was a change of pace.

All three doubles matches concluded with the winner holding at least two breaks and all the singles matches were decided in straight sets, something that hadn't happened in either of the Eagles two previous matches. But was did carry over from previous contests for Head Coach David Goodman's group was strong singles play that was pivotal in the Eagles' 5-4 victory.

Biola No. 1 doubles pair of Colbeyshae Emery and Brooke Fager put their names back in the win column with an 8-4 win that recorded Biola's only doubles point. The freshman duo are now 3-1 in doubles fixtures away from the Biola Tennis Center and seemed to have used that strong first step to the dual match as momentum into their singles wins that would come a bit later in the afternoon.

The race for Biola's first point in singles play pitted Allison Torres and Fager against each other as both women rolled through the two sets of their matches. Torres ended up finishing first with a score of 6-2, 6-1. But Fager wasn't far behind with her 6-2, 6-2 result and has now taken the first set in four of her six singles matches on the year.

Madison Swaney came next and continued her strong play with a 6-3, 6-2 win on the number six court. That's the third win in the past four matches for the Bakersfield, California-native, who has already surpassed her singles win total from her first two years through the first eight matches of the 2020 season.

With Redlands taking wins on courts three and four, it came down to Colbeyshae Emery yet again in a deciding match at No. 1. Having already won her first set 6-3, Emery made sure her team didn't need to watch a third set and won a key tiebreaker in the second to clinch Biola's 5-4 win.

"I'm really proud of our teams for bouncing back from some tough losses of late," said Head Coach David Goodman. "Our teams showed some heart and big determination to win these matches today."

Weather permitting, Biola intends to host Sonoma State at the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday. Keep up to date with the Biola Athletics twitter account to ensure you are aware of any changes to the start time.
