LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball had a little bump in the road with this past Saturday's 11-2 loss against Cal State San Bernardino. But the beauty of a long baseball schedule is that there is usually a chance to return back to usual form pretty quickly. Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group will definitely be moving on with the five games they have scheduled this week. And as much as the stretch of Colorado opponents will be a strain on the Eagles' pitching staff, Biola should be using this circumstance as trial run for the demands they would face in a potential NCAA West Regional. The Eagles obviously won't have the "by any means necessary" approach with the pitching staff over the 41 innings this week the way they would in postseason play. But it is as close to a one-to-one comparison as the hitters will get while also giving Biola a true sense of how deep the pitching staff goes before the Eagles head off to Hawaii for their long road trip.Â
As for where Biola Baseball stands with two weeks and five games in its ledger, the team ranks first in the PacWest in slugging percentage (0.457), walks allowed per nine innings (3.20) and double plays turned (five). Larson Kindreich is tied for first nationally with two wins and a 0.00 ERA and is sixth among all NCAA DII pitchers with 20 punchouts. That's just five strikeouts behind the national leader in that category. Connor Kostecka and Jacob Portaro are also top-five in the conference in terms of toughest hitters to strikeout, going down on strikes once every 20 at-bats.Â

BIOLA (4-1) vs Colorado Christian (4-2) on Thursday Feb. 13 at 2 p.m \\Â Live Stats \\ Live Video
Speaking of long weeks of baseball, Eagles Diamond will be Colorado Christian's fourth Southern California stop in as many days when the Cougars play Biola on Thursday. Colorado Christian started in Costa Mesa on Monday, went north to Santa Barbara on Tuesday and back down to Escondido on Wednesday before coming to La Mirada (presumably to return to the vicinity of LAX to fly back home). The Cougars started the season 3-0 with three wins in Texas but have dropped two of their last three since while giving up six or more runs in both loses.Â
But the losing doesn't mean that CCU's offense has been quite. Their batting order has averaged 12.5 hits per game on the games the Cougars have statistics for and five hitters have batting averages of 0.333 or better. Zayne Willems has eight hits in his 15 at-bats of the season and in carrying a 0.632 on-base percentage. And Hunter Hays leads team with eight RBI's and three extra-base hits.Â
This will be the first all-time meeting between Colorado Christian and Biola Baseball.Â
BIOLA (4-1) vs UC Colorado Springs (2-2) on Friday Feb. 14 at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m and Saturday Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. & 2 p.m. \\Â Live Stats \\ Live Video
Like Biola, the Mountain Lions have a similar level of optimism at the start of the 2020 season, especially after starting the season 2-2 against a Cal Poly Pomona that won the CCAA conference tournament and advanced to the NCAA West Regional a year ago. University Colorado-Colorado Springs is in its fourth year of existence after starting in the 2017 season but has already been rated No. 4 in the RMAC preseason poll released last month and has posted winning records each of the past two years.Â
The Mountain Lions middle infield tandem of Matt McDermott and Matt Clarke were both named Preseason First Team All-Region coming into the year and were off to go starts in the four-game set against CPP. McDermott has an active 12-game hitting streak stretching back to last year after starting this year with a base knock in all four of UCCS' games and recording three stolen bases. Clarke has also swiped three bags and knocked in two of the Mountain Lions' three runs in a close 3-1 win over the Broncos. But Colorado Springs' success through four games has really boiled down to its pitching. All four of the Mountain Lions' started have gone at least six innings in their first outing of the year while allowing two earned runs or fewer.Â
These will also be the first all-time meetings between Biola Baseball and UCCS.Â
