Biola baseball weekly notes from January 27 to February 2

Welcome To The Show

Biola Baseball opens its 2020 season on Friday and Saturday with a three-game series at Eagles Diamond against Cal State Monterey Bay.

January 27, 2020

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There's a lot of excitement floating around Eagles Diamond these days. A new braintrust led by first year Head Coach Jeff Calhoon have brought a drive and passion for excellence that has garnered the Eagles multiple NCAA DI transfers for this season and upgrades like new backstop padding and a hard goods equipment partnership with Marucci.

But the biggest drive of the Eagles' excitement coming into this start to the 2020 season has to be Biola's recently acquired status of full NCAA Membership. Biola Baseball is eligible for NCAA postseason play for the first time in 2020 and Calhoon and the staff have motivated this year's group with the opportunity of setting the tone for the program's next 10 years by being the first team to qualify for an NCAA West Regional.

PacWest teams have traditionally needed to finish in the top two of the conference standings in order to qualify for postseason play. But the Biola Boys are confident that type of finish isn't too far out of reach because they return six players with previous All-PacWest recognition, including a full infield with Jackson Collins, RobertAnthony Cruz, and Connor Kostecka earning all-conference honors in 2019 and Jacob Portaro doing the same in 2018, The Eagles also return a stable of sophomores through seniors who already gained experience as key pieces in the 2019 team and will step into established roles in the starting rotation and lineup.

Brandon Cody and Andy Van Antwerp both return after being regular starters in the outfield a year ago and have both shown promise while taking on leadership roles in the leadup to this season. The starting rotation also figures to be solid with three-quarters of last year's members returning.

Biola's journey starts with this three-game series against an Otters team that went to the West Regional last year and finished with a 35-23 record. CSUMB was picked to finish second in the CCAA preseason poll and received two first place votes. The Otters return All-CCAA first team outfielder Kyle Dean, second-teamer pitcher Greg Steinbeck and two All-CCAA honorable mention players.

Cal State Monterey Bay has won at least 30 games in four of the past five seasons and has qualified for three NCAA West Regionals since 2016. The Otters have also been a great road team over the past two years with a combined 37-13 record away from Seaside since the start of 2018. This will be the Otters' second all-time meeting with the Eagles: CSUMB clipped the Eagles by a 7-6 score in Seaside in February 2011.
