Weekly Notes for Women's Basketball from January 19 to January 25

We’ve Seen You Before

Biola Women’s Basketball has rematches with Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican on the docket this week.

January 22, 2020

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- It's about that time of the season when a number of milestones are beginning to fall for the members of Biola Women's Basketball. With two more games last week, senior guards Tatum Brimley and Kayla Macedo both surpassed 100 games played in a Biola uniform while they continue to march toward new marks. Brimley has surpassed 100 made three-pointers with 105 while Macedo joined the 1,000 career minutes club last week. But both women have a good shot at reaching new points milestones this week as Biola hosts Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday and Dominican on Saturday. Macedo is 18 points shy of 300 for her career and has already set a new personal best for points in a season as a senior. Brimley is 32 points away from 900 in a Biola uniform and is well on her way to 2,500 minutes played with 11 games left in the regular season.

But the women who's on track to reach a number of new milestones this week in forward Danita Estorga. With her customary production over the next two games, Estorga could surpass 400 career points, 1,000 career minutes, 250 rebounds, 50 steals and 50 assists among other categories in a Biola uniform. Milestones for every Eagles who has played two or more seasons with the program are listed at the end of this week's notes and will be updated each week as the season continues.

BIOLA (11-6, 7-4 PacWest) vs Notre Dame de Namur (5-13, 3-9 PacWest): Thursday January 23 at 5:30 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
iola Women's Basketball plays its second rematch of this year's conference schedule tonight against the Notre Dame de Namur Argos, who they defeated 51-44 in Belmont on December 5, 2019.

Notre Dame de Namur comes to Chase Gym riding high after holding Dominican to 41 points on Monday for the Argos' second-straight PacWest win. The conference leading scorer Jerusha Paine still got hers with 19 points and 13 rebounds on the night. NDNU's defense held the Penguins to eight points in both the first and fourth quarters to limit Dominican to its lowest scoring output in almost seven years. Meanwhile, the Argos' bench scoring was the second difference maker in the victory, as the substitutes scored 36 of the team's 51 points led by Auren Isaacson's 20 points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc.

All that is a familiar story to Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team since the Eagles were almost held under 10 points in two quarters at Belmont and saw Isaacson score 22 points. But the Eagles matched the defensive intensity in their first meeting with the Argos and played particularly well in the fourth quarter on the way to outscoring NDNU 18-to-12. Jazz Benn and Danita Estorga were the only double figure scorers in that win for Biola. But the Argos cannot expect that to happen again with the emergence of Eagles' offense and Biola's ability to score against any defensive scheme.

Biola has already shown that the likes of Kayla Macedo and Stephanie Lee can light it up from beyond the arc if the opposing defense tries to crowd the paint. But Tatum Brimley and Aysia have the driving ability to take advantage of an open paint if the other team is paying too much attention to the arc. The Eagles will certainly be prepared, as they're already 2-0 this season in rematches.

BIOLA (11-6, 7-4 PacWest) vs Dominican (7-10, 4-7 PacWest): Saturday January 25 at 2 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
As a result of their impressive success at the top of the PacWest in recent years and strong scoring numbers this season that has resulted in an average of 70 points per game, the Dominican Penguins are always treated with the type of respect and caution that is due an opponent who can come up with blow out wins. Dominican has scored 80 points five times this season and has the nation's leading scorer in Jerusha Paine, who averages 25.6 points and over 10 rebounds a game. But the Penguins' record indicates that they've struggled to get a rhythm in other aspects of the game. Dominican averages almost 22 turnovers per contest and has struggles with the three-point ball at both ends of the floor. Dominican has given up the most three-pointers in the PacWest at 150 while making fewer than half that number as a team (71).

And the Eagles' first meeting with the Penguins was defined by Biola's success from beyond the arc. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group tied the program's NCAA-Era record with 17 made three-pointers in the 84-53 victory. Seven different women drained a three-ball for the Eagles in that win as Biola scored 21 points or more in each of the first quarters. One has to expect the Penguins to emphasize three-point defense in the rematch. But Biola might well double down from that range in an effort to get their offense rolling again after an 0-2 record last week. The Eagles have averaged almost nine made threes a game in the nine games since their dominant win over the Dominican.
