Not Quite Enough In Opener

Biola commits almost 40 attack errors as it gets back into the groove against Regis.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- The 2019 season swung open on Friday and saw a mix of good and not so good for the Eagles as Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's team suffered a 3-1 loss to Regis.

The first set was the biggest low of the day, with BU hitting in the negative and getting beat by double-digits, but Seltzer's squad shook it off for a nice bounce back second set and kept it close all the way to the finish (13-25; 25-23; 18-25; 21-25).

The fourth set was the clincher for the Rangers, which was bittersweet to Biola fans who sat back and watched their Eagles leading almost the entire frame. It was not until Biola had already hit the 20-point mark that Regis put together a late run to steal the game and ultimately the match. The Rangers won six of the final seven points of that fourth set to get the win.

The Rangers worked their way to victory with a balanced attack featuring three players with 10+ kills. Things were not as smooth for Biola offensively, hitting under .150 in every set, including the -.156 (6 kills, 11 errors) in the opener.

Overall though, the perspective should focus on the team effort of BU to keep things close against a Regis side that perennially makes the NCAA postseason. The Eagles used nine players in the match, and a majority of those players (5) were not on the team last season.

So, it was all about "getting to know you." Or, in Becca Branch's case, getting to know you all over again. It was Branch's first game for BU since her freshman year back in 2015. She played setter for BU that season before taking time off to focus on her nursing degree. Today she played outside hitter for the Eagles and was the team's leading attacker early in the match. She'd end up with six kills on 30 swings and also added a productive 15 digs.

The Eagles' leading hitter was Sabrina Winslow, who was classic Sabrina swinging hard and jumping high all day long. She'd end up with 15 kills on 41 swings to lead all players in the match. Winslow was also effective at the net, getting in on five of the Eagles' eight blocks.

Bekah Roth had eight kills and the freshman tandem of Raegan Tjepkema and Abigail Copeland combined for 11 to help the Eagles' effort. Ultimately, the Rangers side was much more effective with their swings, which helped in the critical moments down the stretch. Regis had just two more kills than Biola, but those came on over 20 fewer swings. The Rangers also committed 20 fewer attacking errors to record a team hitting percentage of .254, which bettered Biola's .063 by a wide margin.

The good news for BU is that the attacking issue should be quickly correctable. Only eight of the Eagles' 35 attack errors were blocks, so the other unforced errors could just be a matter of shaking the rust off. Regis already had a chance to shake their arms out with a five-set win last night against Alaska Anchorage.

The setting duties were split by Marissa Price and Vanessa Garcia, which figures to be the go-to tandem for BU for at least the beginning part of the season with Abby Brewster on the mend. Price had 20 assists and seven digs and Garcia was 15 and nine. Both ladies ended with a pair of aces.

The service line was relatively good to Biola today, with the Eagles limiting themselves to just six service errors. To contrast, Regis had 12 to go with just seven aces.

Biola will have its second shot to get its first win when it goes toe-to-toe with the tournament host Alaska Anchorage at 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday.
