Perfect Pool Play!

Biola finishes with a 6-4 win to advance to tonight's semifinals.

BOTETOURT, Va. --- Six seems to be the magic number this tournament for Biola Softball. The Eagles scored six times for the third-consecutive game en route to a 6-4 win over Judson (IL). The win helps BU finish pool play with a perfect 3-0 record and advance to tonight's semifinal round as the top seed from pool B.

The top four seeds of the tournament are the four teams that advanced, with Biola set to play No. 4 Concordia (Mich.) and the Eagles' morning opponent Judson set to take on No. 1 seed Erskine in the other semifinal.

Once again Biola started the scoring early in this one. The Eagles got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning thanks to the tablesetters once again doing their jobs. Ruth Munoz and Areana Ramos reached back-to-back to start the game, which set up Hailey Boyett to do some damage. The senior drove the ball to the left-center gap to score two.

That lead doubled when Madison Blossey hit a double nearly identical to Boyett's fto drive home both Boyett and Missy Poti. After the first-inning explosion the Eagles had the chance hand the ball back to Paula Damas with a four-run lead.

In the top half of the second Judson capitalized on an error to score their first run. It was the first run Biola's surrendered all tournament long. It began a string of four-consecutive one-run innings for the opposing Eagles, which added up to their game-ending four-run total.

Fortunately for Biola its offense did not come to a complete stop in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles were blanked in the second, but managed what equated to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the third when a Tori Apodaca single brought Caitlin Fowble across home plate. Fowble was pinch-running for Boyett who clubbed her second-straight double to open the inning.

The double was the clear weapon of choice in this game as a Ruth Munoz lead-off double setup the Eagles' chance at insurance in the fourth inning. Munoz was driven home on the very next batter as Ramos came through with a single up the middle.

After back-to-back singles from Judson to start the top of the fifth inning Head Coach Nikki Udria elected to bring in Paige Austin to attempt to lock down the win. Austin limited the damage to one run in that half-inning and went on to breeze through a 1-2-3 sixth and 1-2-3 seventh to earn her second pitching win of the tournament.

Munoz had another great game to continue what's been a fantastic tournament for her. She was 2-for-4 and scored twice. She's scored five of Biola's 18 runs in this tournament so far.

Hailey Boyett is the only other player to end with multiple hits in this one. She had two hits, scored a run and drove in two others. She's had at least one hit in each game this tournament.

The Eagles improve to 27-16 overall this season with the win. They will face the Cardinals of Concordia Ann Arbor in the 3:00 p.m. PT semifinal on Thursday night. It's the second time in as many years that a Biola team has faced Concordia (MI) in a NCCAA semifinal Biola Women's Soccer beat the Cardinals 1-0 in fall of 2017 en route to their NCCAA National Championship.
