Biola Can’t Shake Sunbirds

Biola Women’s Tennis was unable to upset Fresno Pacific’s undefeated record at the Haak Tennis Complex.

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola Women's Tennis traveled to Fresno on Monday to make up a match against the Sunbirds that had been delayed in early February.

Since that match was rescheduled, Fresno Pacific went 8-0 at the Haak Tennis Center before facing the Eagles and then carried that momentum into Monday's 4-0 win over Biola.

Even with the loss, the Eagles should still be in good spirits on Monday because of the announcement from the conference office that Biola officially qualified for the PacWest Tennis Championship in Surprise, Arizona. The seeding for the 12-team tournament will be determined next week.

Although the Sunbirds ended up taking all three doubles decisions to open up the match, the Eagles weren't blown away by any means. Fresno Pacific had to eek out 6-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to guarantee the first point of the match. The team of Ines Diaz and Allison Torres still remain over .500 at 6-5 after the loss and Diaz particularly used the result at fuel for her singles match.

Diaz understandably would have been motivated to player her best tennis on Monday as the opposing team included a former schoolmate from IES Es Piles in Gijon, Spain. The freshman narrowly lossed her first long set in a tiebreaker before the match was called at one game apiece in the second set.

Fresno Pacific clinched the dual match with straight-set victories at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, with Diaz' former colleague Claudia Iglesias spoiling a sort of homecoming for Lauren Lee, who went to Buchanan High School a little over 10 miles away from FPU's campus. But Lee still has a team-best seven singles victories this season and is 7-5 overall.

Lily Waterhouse (3-6, 3-3) and Madison Swaney (4-6, 0-4) also walked away from their match unfinished like Diaz.

The Eagles will head back out on the road on Thursday for a match against former GSAC peer Westmont College. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 noon.
