With both teams having completed their 32-game PacWest schedule, this week's non-conference series with Hawaii Hilo marks the end of the regular season for the Vulcans and the Biola Eagles. Hawaii Hilo will be making its first-ever trip to Eagles Diamond this week after playing the first 12 games of the all-time series with Biola in Hilo. And among the other things Biola is playing for this week, the things directly under the Eagles' control are another potential 30-win season and a 20-6 mark at home. Head Coach Justin Duarte's group would need to sweep Hawaii Hilo to make it four-straight years with 30 wins or more and give the senior class a fitting sendoff that testifies to the group's success. The potential of a 20-6 record at home in 2019 would also eclipse the Eagles' 22-9 mark from 2017 and be the best performance at Eagles Diamond since 2011, when Biola went 20-5 at home at 38-22 overall while qualifying for the NAIA Opening Round.
But the Vulcans also have something big to play for even though the conference schedule is over. Hawaii Hilo has basically become the hottest team in the PacWest since the end of March and has vaulted into second place in the conference standings after winning 13 in a row and 15 of its last 16. A few more road wins on the Vulcans' resume would be a big help for their chances of getting an NCAA West Regional at-large berth and would even out the series loss Hawaii Hilo suffered to the Eagles to start PacWest play. Hawaii Hilo comes into the series with two series wins in California this year and is 6-6 in PacWest games on the road this year.
With the abbreviate break between last week's play and this series, both teams will have to shuffle their normal pitching rotations and depend more heavily on the offense to carry them to wins, especially on Wednesday and Thursday. Statistically, that puts the advantage in Biola's corner since the Eagles still have the consensus third-best offense in the PacWest and score a full run more per game that the Vulcans. Hilo has been relying on its pitching to carry it through this win streak, having allowed five runs or fewer in its last 14 wins. So if sophomores Brandon Cody, Jackson Collins and Connor Kostecka can stay hot, along with getting the consistent production from seniors Jerron Largusa and Joey Magro, among others, the Eagles may be able to replicate what happened in the Hawaii Pacific series: working long innings to chase the opponent's starters and win the series against a taxed bullpen.
Friday's doubleheader will be preceded by a senior day for Biola's six seniors: Joey Magro, Anj Bourgeois, Zach Labounty, Troy Stainbrook, Dallas Burk and Jerron Largusa. The ceremony will begin promptly at 11:35 a.m. and families of the seniors are encouraged to join the players in front of the first-base dugout at 11:30 a.m. Free chicken sandwiches will also be offered between games on Friday courtesy of Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace.
