A Win To Send Us Off

Biola heads home with a 7-1 record on its NorCal road trip.

BELMONT, Calif. --- Biola Softball had to quickly shake off the bitter taste of defeat after a disappointing game one loss and come up with an excellent performance in game two in order to end its eight-game road trip on a high note.

That's exactly what Head Coach Nikki Udria's team was able to accomplish. The Eagles held Notre Dame de Namur off the board behind a dominant performance from Paige Austin and got enough timely offense to get the job done in a 4-0 win.

The victory caps off a remarkable PacWest road trip that saw the Eagles work their way into third place in the conference standings behind seven wins and just the one loss. Biola is now 10 games over .500 overall and 10 games over .500 in conference play.

Austin gave up just one base hit to the Argos, but still had to work through some difficulty due to five free passes. NDNU got runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings, but then Austin and the Eagles' defense settled in and worked a bunch of quick innings in a row.

Biola's offense once again got going early on in this one with multiple base runners in the first inning and by pushing the game's first run across in the second frame.

A Kylie Velasco single started the offense in the second inning. A double steal by Velasco and Haley Martinez got Biola two runners in scoring position with just one out and Andi Hormel coming up. Hormel would double to score Velasco, but Martinez got caught at the plate limiting BU to just the one run.

The Eagles would get a runner to second in each of the next two innings, but the next runs didn't come across until the fifth. Hormel was once again in the mix, leading off the inning with a walk and working her way to third base off of back-to-back wild pitches.

A Kayla Neff walk and Ruth Munoz bunt single gave the Eagles a bases loaded, nobody out situation. Areana Ramos would drive in the game's second run on a sacrifice fly and then two more would score when freshman Caitlin Fowble hit a pinch-hit single.

The four runs were more than enough for Austin, who needed just 10 NDNU batters to record the final nine outs of the game. Four of the final five outs of the game were strikeouts that illustrated just how dominant Austin had become.

Six players accounted for BU's seven hits with Kylie Velasco going 2-for-2 to end the road trip on a high note. Austin's complete game shutout concluded an outstanding trip for the sophomore. She appeared in seven of the eight games and threw a combined 29.1 innings allowing runs in just one of those seven appearances (3 total).

The Eagles' sit at 23-13 (18-8 PacWest) with four games left in the regular season. Your next chance to catch BU in action will be this coming Thursday night at Freedom Field for Senior Night vs. Concordia Irvine. The games begin at 4 p.m. with Senior Night festivities planned for right around 3:30 p.m.
