Concordia Takes The Rematch

Biola Women’s Tennis opened up the PacWest Tennis Championships with a first-round loss to No. 6-seed Concordia.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- Biola Women's Tennis kicked off its first-ever PacWest Tennis Championships on Thursday at the Surprise Tennis & Raquet Club, dropping its opening match to the No. 6-seed Concordia Eagles 5-0.

The No. 11 seed Biola Eagles will move into the consolation bracket after the loss and will play Holy Names on Thursday at 5 p.m. in an attempt to average a close loss on the road from earlier in the year. A win against the Hawks would secure eighth-place in the conference for Biola and would push them to the match to determine seventh-place on Saturday.

In similar fashion to the teams' first meeting this season, Concordia jumped out early by taking two quick doubles wins and the first set on five courts in singles. CUI won doubles with 6-1 and 6-2 wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights, respectively and had a 4-2 lead at No. 2 before the match was called.

Biola's most successful performance in singles came from Allison Torres at No. 6, where the junior was two games away from a straight-set victory at the point Concordia officially won. Torres won her first set convincingly at 6-2 and was up 4-3 in the second as she searched for his sixth singles win of the year. But she'll look to get that sixth win Thursday to reverse a three-set loss to Holy Names in March.

Esther Lee put up a better fight against No.19-ranked Ghazal Pakbaten in her second set with a 6-3 loss, but eventually fell in straights along with three other Eagles. Like Torres, Lily Waterhouse also left the dual match with an unfinished singles contest, abandoning the match at 1-3 down in the second after losing the first set 6-2.

Thursday's match against Holy Names will give Biola a chance to surpass one of its most successful seasons in recent memory with its 10th win of the season. With a current record of 9-11, the Eagles have already matched the win total from the 2010 team that went 9-13, which was the current record for most wins in one season over the past 20 years.
