Season Ends At Championships

Biola Women’s Tennis closed out it season with a 4-1 loss and a lot of guts in the PacWest Championships consolation round.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- The 2019 season came to an end on Thursday at the PacWest Tennis Championships for Biola Women's Tennis, with the Eagles losing their consolation match to Holy Names by a score of 4-1.

Even without the win, the match was a fitting conclusion to the Eagles' most successful season since 2010. Head Coach David Goodman's group showed a lot of heart and fight in singles after falling behind 1-0 in doubles and gave itself a chance to win the match with a number of second-set comebacks.

Holy Names started the contest with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to put the breaks on the 5-3 lead that Allison Torres and Ines Diaz had built on the No. 3 court. Torres rebounded quickly in singles with a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 6 flight to momentarily tie the match at 1-1. The win was a big one for Torres, as it pushed her to an even six wins and six losses on the year in singles and avenges a singles loss at Holy Names on March 4.

The Eagles then picked up momentum with a second set win from Lauren Lee and a close 4-3 score from Lily Waterhouse in the second set as Biola tried to piece together a comeback. Tinisee Kandakai and Esther Lee both got good returns for their efforts in their respective first sets. Kandakai won the first set 6-3 while Lee dropped a tough first set tiebreaker 7-5.

Ines Diaz also pushed hard to help the comeback in her second set by pushing it to a potential tiebreaker at 6-6. But the match was called before the set could be completed and before L. Lee could finish off her 10th win of the season up 5-2 in the third set. L. Lee still finished win the most singles victories on the team for the second year in a row, concluding the season with a 9-6 singles record to go along with eight wins in doubles.

Lauren will return next season along with the majority of the roster as the Eagles look with a lot of optimism to 2020. This year was filled with a number of exciting wins, individually and as a team, and the program's first appearance at the PacWest Tennis Championships. Thanks is due to Tinisee Kandakai for all she contributed to the program and the Eagles will definitely be back next year with an improved facility and a reloaded roster that hopes to make a run in Surprise.
