Biola Softball gets a Dominican Penguins team that's lost four in a row and eight of its last 10 contests. The Penguins played Azusa Pacific on Sunday, April 14 and lost both (3-0, 10-8). Biola hasn't played in over a week and also has losses to Azusa Pacific as its last two results. Prior to that the Eagles had won six in a row and 13 of their last 16 contests. The Eagles are 9-1 all-time against Dominican and have won seven in a row vs. the Penguins. This includes a pair of big wins (7-1, 9-0) at Freedom Field in early March of last season. Areana Ramos led that offensive outburst with a pair of four-RBI games. Six of Biola's 16 hits in the doubleheader went for extra-bases, including a pair of big flies from Ramos. Paige Austin pitched just two innings in the series against DUC last spring, with Terri Van Dagens, Paula Damas and Kaile Chavez handling most of the work. Damas got a win in the shortened game two, going four shutout innings and allowing just four hits. Dominican averages 3.5 runs-per-game this season and has allowed opponents an average of 6.6 runs-per-game. Teams are hitting .344 against DUC in 2019. That's good news for this Biola lineup, which is coming off its lowest-scoring PacWest doubleheader of the season (three total runs). Biola managed just nine hits in its losses to APU a week ago. Junior utility player Mady Christensen is the most potent bat in the Dominican lineup. She's started all 30 games this season for the Penguins and leads the team with 32 hits, a .337 batting average 10 extra-base hits and 20 RBI. Christensen went 2-for-7 in the doubleheader at Biola last season.
McKenzie Schumacher was the most effective bat for DUC in that series, recording three hits and never being responsible for stranding runners with an out. Biola has not lost to Dominican since March 13, 2003 when the Penguins won a 3-1 contest at Freedom Field.

Notre Dame de Namur lost its first 31 games of the year before taking two straight from Holy Names at home on April 7. Those two wins (2-0, 2-0) are still the Argos' only victories of the year, after losing all four to Concordia Irvine this past weekend. NDNU has another tough test before it gets to Biola, hosting red-hot Azusa Pacific on Monday and Tuesday this week. Biola is 16-3 all-time against NDNU dating back to the programs' first meeting back in 1996. Biola has won the last three meetings, including both of last season's contests. The Eagles' 9-2 and 7-2 victories last season were the first two contests between Biola and Notre Dame de Namur since way back in 2009. Biola limited the Argos to eight total hits in last year's doubleheader. The Eagles used 22 hits to produce their 16 runs. The Eagles' nine runs scored in game one last season came as the result of a total team effort with nine different players scoring a run and four players having multi-hit games. Three of those four players will have chances to hit this week as well. Kayla Neff had an especially great day at the dish with five hits in her six at-bats. She drove in five runs and scored one run as Biola managed its 16 runs all without the benefit of a single homer. NDNU comes into this week with a .189 team batting average. The Argos have allowed opponents 281 runs this season through their first 38 games (7.4 runs-per-game). NDNU has plated 52 runs of its own (1.4 runs-per-game).

FOWBLE WOWBLE: Biola is 5-0 this season in games
Caitlin Fowble has started. She's started three games in right field and two at DP with the Eagles posting an unblemished record in that time. Her last two starts came March 25 and 26 against Chaminade.
PINCH-HIT PERFECTION: Kylie Velasco is a starter more often than not, but in the rare occasion she's not in the starting lineup she's been a big weapon off the bench for Head Coach
Nikki Udria. Velasco is 3-for-3 in pinch-hit situations, with a double and a homerun accounting for two of those three hits.
QUALITY STARTS: Paige Austin has gone at least seven innings in seven of her last eight starts. She's allowed one earned run or fewer in five of those starts. She went six shutout innings in her only start last season against this week's opponents (NDNU on 4/14).

GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Biola has a brand new coaching staff this season as Head Coach
Nikki Udria begins her first season at the helm for BU. Along with Udria is assistant
Justine McLean. Though young, the staff has a wealth of big-time experience as Udria and McLean have NCAA Division I roots (Oregon/Florida). Udria was on the staff last year as an assistant coach under Lorie Coleman, taking over for Janie Takeda who took a job at the University of Oklahoma. Udria played four years at the University of Oregon before graduating in 2017. She led the Ducks to four postseason appearances and three Pac-12 Championships while earning major accolades all four years of her career. In 2017 she was an NFCA NCAA Division I First Team All-American. McLean is from Rancho Cucamonga, but she played her college ball for the Florida Gators the same time Udria was at Oregon. McLean earned All-SEC honors and made the Women's College World Series all-tournament team, while helping the Gators to a 229-36 overall record between 2014-17. The Gators won the Women's College World Series her freshman and sophomore seasons. In addition to their regular coaching duties, both regularly host camps/clinics throughout the year.

Kristin Halte recently re-joined the Biola coaching staff as the team's pitching coach. She was on staff under Head Coach Lorie Coleman from 2012-16 and returns this year to help the Eagles' talented young pitching staff.
