Cornerstone Cup Chapter Two

Biola Baseball heads to Azusa this weekend looking to spoil the Cougars nine-game winning streak at home.

March 27, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. ---

Last week's series sweep over NCCAA peer Saint Katherine was all about power for Biola Baseball. The 42 runs the Eagles scored over the three-game winning streak was the most number of runs Biola has scored over a three-game span since March 2010 when it scored 45 runs and won three-straight against San Diego Christian. Biola batters raised the team batting average by 14 points over the weekend and smashed 19 extra-base hits, including three homeruns in the final game of the series from RobertAnthony Cruz, Jerron Largusa and Jackson Collins. After collecting double-figure hits during both games on Saturday, the Eagles are now 10-1 this season when getting 10 hits or more and basically saw the entire offense click on all cylinders against the Firebirds.

Both Collins and Largusa had three RBI's apiece in game one of the series and lead the team in homeruns and RBi's respectively. Tyler Piston hit a big homerun in game two and had four RBI's while Miguel Abascal reached safely five times in that game. Then RobertAnthony Cruz concluded a massive weekend for the sophomore infielder with three hits, three runs scored and four RBI's in the series capper. Cruz is now tied with Largusa with 12 extra-base hits to lead the team and has a conference best 11 doubles this season.

The power was seen on the mound as well since Biola pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts or more in all three games last week. Senior Troy Stainbrook struckout nine while allowing just one hit in a win on Friday. While the Kindreich brothers both k'ed six in three innings of work each on Saturday. The Eagles pitching staff will need to remain sharp headed into a series with the PacWest first-place APU Cougars, especially since Azusa Pacific scored 52 runs in four games against Hawaii Hilo this past weekend.

Azusa Pacific comes into this Cornerstone Cup Series on a tear at home and has won eight-straight PacWest games at the Cougar Baseball Complex. APU was recently ranked No. 13 in the national poll this past Tuesday and scored 52 runs in its most recent series against Hawaii Hilo, including a 22-0 victory over the Vulcans last Friday. But the Eagles have just one win fewer than the Cougars in the common opponents the teams have played conference games against. The Eagles went 3-1 against UH Hilo in Hawaii and matched the Cougars with a 2-2 record against Holy Names in PacWest play. Azusa Pacific has three hitters with seven or more homeruns and five batters who have drive in 20 runs or more during its 29 games this season. Third baseman Osvaldo Tovalin lead APU in every major offensive category coming into the series with Biola and has struckout just 11 times in 189 at-bats this season. That has helped the Cougars hit .300 as a team so far this season while score 195 runs and allowing just 85. Azusa Pacific relies heavily on strong starting pitching that has delivered time and again this season. It only takes a glance at APU's stats to see that the Cougars one, two and three in the starting rotation is A.J. Woodall, Declan Kearney and Nick Estrella, three men who all have pitched over 30 innings and have over 30 strikeouts this season.

The Eagles went 1-4 against Azusa Pacific last year but won the only game they played at the Cougar Baseball Complex last season. Troy Stainbrook struckout 10 Western Oregon Wolves in six innings of work during a 8-1 win for Biola in that game
