Series Win Salvages Two-Day Game

Biola Softball earned a well deserved victory over Hawaii Hilo to win the series, 3-1.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The longest game, and series, of the year came to a successful conclusion on Thursday afternoon as Biola Softball managed a 6-2 defeat of the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans.

The game began on Wednesday night and got about a half-inning into its second-half on thursday before both teams had to clear the field again for a rain delay of about an hour.

The Eagles had built a 6-0 lead before the rain delay thanks to three runs on Wednesday night and another three right away on Thursday courtesy a Sicili Brittingham bases-clearing three-run double.

The freshman was the first batter when the game resumed, beginning with an 0-2 count and the bases loaded. She watched two balls to even the count before finding a gap in right-center and doubling the BU lead.

The Eagles' other three runs came in last night's action when BU got one across in the first and two more at the beginning of the halted third inning, with both of the initial third-inning runs coming courtesy miscues by the UHH pitcher.

Biola's starting pitcher made very few errors throughout the two days. Paula Damas, just a day after missing a doubleheader to illness, seemed impenetrable against the Hawaii Hilo hitters in a split appearance. She threw three scoreless on Wednesday night surrendering just two hits to the UHH lineup.

Then, after she was removed in favor of the fresh arm of Paige Austin, she came back into the game on Thursday and threw another 3.1 scoreless innings. She was helped out by a Biola defense that had its wits about it, recording a pair of flashy lineout inning-ending double plays in the fifth and sixth, erasing the two hits Damas did allow after her reinsertion.

Hawaii Hilo was able to pick up two runs in the contest with a two-out hit driving in a pair of runners who'd made it to second and third for the Vulcans.

That'd be it for offense for either side as the second half of the game (after the rain delay) zipped by.

The win helped Biola take 3 of four from Hawaii Hilo and improve to 12-10 (7-5 PacWest). The Vulcans' tough luck in the series sees them fall to 17-7 (12-4 PacWest). Next up for Biola is a four-game set against Chaminade (10-13, 7-9 PacWest) at home on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
