Moving On

A frustrating game two will motivate Biola for Wednesday's action.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- One bad inning can make or break an entire game. In the case of Tuesday's second game of the doubleheader, it broke the game for Biola Softball. The Eagles gave up eight runs in the third inning to help Hawaii Hilo take an 11-3 game two win to split the first day of the series.

Both teams went down without any hits in their first two chances at the plate, but an error to open the third inning with a base runner for Hilo came back to haunt BU as the Vulcans scored seven two-out runs in the frame to assert a stronghold on the game.

The inning included a homerun on one of the hardest hit balls ever at Freedom Field. A three-run homerun from UHH's Skylar Thomas struck halfway up the light pole in right-center field to extend the Hilo to lead to 8-0 before Head Coach Nikki Udria decided to make a switch and go back to game one starter Paige Austin to finish game two for BU.

Austin would go 3.1 innings in relief and held the Vulcans in check for the most part, allowing three runs late in her outing before the game finished one inning early due to the eight-run rule.

Biola's only offense came in the fifth and sixth innings, but it was not going to be enough to keep the game going. With one out in the fifth the Eagles managed three-straight base runners to manufacture a run and keep the game going at 8-1. The team left two runners stranded with a quick last two outs and then UHH extended their lead in the top of the sixth.

BU came within one run of extending the game again when Areana Ramos hit a two-out dinger to leave the yard for the second time on the day (and second of the year). The two-run homer brought Biola back within eight at 11-3, but a groundout would keep the margin eight and end the sixth inning, bringing the game to a close early.

The Eagles managed just four hits off the Hawaii Hilo game two starter, Valerie Alvarado. Alvarado is a La Mirada native completing her studies on the Big Island. She won the game for Hilo, moving to 5-2 on the season.

The big loss leaves a sour taste in the Eagles' mouth as they turn their attention to winning the series with two more games coming on Wednesday. First pitch is again scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Following today's action Hawaii Hilo sits at 17-5 (12-2 PacWest) and Biola remains neutral at 10-10 (5-5 PacWest).
