Gut-Wrenching Finish

A heart-breaking reversal in the third-set tiebreak to end the match leads to a 4-3 loss for Biola Men’s Tennis.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In a poorly timed moment of miscommunication in the third-set tiebreaker that decided the dual match between the Eagles and Colorado Mesa, it seemed like Biola Men's Tennis had stormed back to take the match.

Up 6-5 in the tiebreaker, Logan Blair ran in from the baseline, pushed a forehand to the corner that looked to be a winner and sent his team running onto the court to congratulate him as he shook hands with Moises Cure. But Cure wouldn't let go and was adamant that the ball had gone wide. The umpire elected not to overrule the outcall and the tiebreaker went on with a score of 6-6.

You have to give credit to the Salem, Oregon-native for buckling down mentality and refocusing to win the match. The tiebreaker would go on for 12 more points after the controversy at 6-5 with Blair taking 10-9 and 11-10 leads. But Cure finally took the marathon breaker to win the match for the Mavericks by the closest of margins, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11).

About three hours before the teams walked off the court for the night, the Eagles dropped a tough doubles point after taking the first doubles decision with a 6-2 win at No. 3. Colorado Mesa responded quickly with a 6-2 win at No. 2 and then grinded to a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles to head into singles with a 1-0 lead.

Head Coach David Goodman's experienced group was undeterred by the deficit and rattled off three straight-set singles wins. Edwyn Ramos earned his first win playing No. 1 singles at the Biola Tennis Center with a 6-2, 6-1 win to even the score at 1-1. Then the ever-dependable David Garcia and Derek James won their respective singles contests to push Biola to three points.

It was the second singles win in a row for Garcia and the eighth for James, who is 8-0 on the year with three unfinished singles matches.

The Mavericks stalled Erik Martinez' attempt at clinching the match on the No. 6 court by winning the tiebreak in the second set and taking the third 6-0. Then Cure held his serve late in the third set and lucked out in the tiebreaker to take the match.

The Eagles will take two days to prepare for their next match. They'll host Ottawa (Ariz.) at the Biola Tennis Center on Thursday evening.
