Eagles Tame The Mustangs

Biola Women’s Tennis posts its biggest win of the year so far with a 4-1 victory at home over Western New Mexico.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It took some minor convincing after Monday's match against Western New Mexico to show the Eagles what they had accomplished. The members of the Biola women's tennis team knew they had played well because they had clinched the match with three straight-set victories and won their fourth match at home.

But Head Coach David Goodman had to resort to rattling off the UTR's of the Eagles' singles opponents to show his group that they had just taken it to a formidable opponent. Biola regains its winning record after Monday at 4-3 and gets its third-straight win at home. Western New Mexico falls to 6-5 on the season after dropping the first of four matches it plays in Southern California this week.

"I thought we played the best match of the year so far and I was really proud of the way we competed today," said Head Coach David Goodman. "We played really well at two and three doubles and got the [doubles] point which I really felt was crucial for us today. And in singles, winning the first set on five of the six courts was huge. We didn't really give them any momentum which made a big difference in the singles."

Despite dropping the first doubles decision, the Eagles had a bunch of confidence as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches came to a close because of how well Biola was playing at the net and pushing the Mustangs back. In a span of about two minutes, Ines Diaz and Allison Torres wrapped up a 6-3 win at No. 3 followed by a 6-2 result at No. 2 for Anna Hartmann and Lily Waterhouse.

Both duos earned their third wins together on Monday while Hartmann collected a team-best fifth win in doubles this season. Additionally, the Eagles improve to 7-0 at the No. 3 doubles flight this season.

When the match moved to singles, the Eagles' mental toughness and attack mindset was embodied by Ines Diaz at the No. 3 spot. Diaz fell behind 3-0 in the first set of her singles matches and had a few questionable calls go against her in key moments early on. But that only spurred Diaz to take full control. The Spaniard won six of the next seven game to win the set 6-4 while her teammates took the first set on four other courts to put Biola in the driver's seat.

Esther Lee raced through her second set to finish the first singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-1 and was followed in the next three minutes or so by Lauren Lee and Lily Waterhouse. Lauren Lee won her third singles decision in a row by a score 6-2, 6-1 while Waterhouse clinched the match on her serve and won 6-2, 6-2.

Biola now has more overall wins and home wins this season than it had during the entire 2018 campaign. The Eagles will return to the Biola Tennis Center Tuesday to host Angelo State (Texas) at 2 p.m.
