A Wild Finish

Biola couldn't come up with the sweep in its two games vs. HNU.

MORAGA, Calif. --- Biola Softball couldn't close out the doubleheader sweep against Holy Names on Friday as it lost game two in gut-wrenching fashion, 6-5.

The Eagles led 2-0 and led 4-2 at different points in the ballgame, but four runs in the final three innings helped lift the Hawks to their first PacWest Conference win of the season and set up a crucial second-half of the four-game set on Sunday.

Holy Names won the game on a walk-off wild pitch after a two-base error allowed Holy Names to get their leadoff runner on in a tie-game in the bottom of the seventh. Valentina Fontes reached on a dropped fly ball to the outfield, moved around to third on a wild pitch and then scampered home when the 11th pitch to the HNU no. 2 hitter went to the backstop and allowed the Hawks to get the win.

Just like in game one Biola got its scoring out of the way early in the contest. The Eagles scored two in the first inning when a Missy Poti single brought home Kayla Neff and Hailey Boyett.

Biola doubled its lead to 4-0 in the second frame when HNU compounded a bunch of errors and saw their starter leave the game after getting just three outs. After scoring twice, Biola stranded runners on second and third with back-to-back lineouts to end the inning.

Runners left on would be an issue throughout the game for Biola as they stranded runners in every inning except the fourth.

The 1-2-3 offensive inning in the fourth did not seem like too big of an issue as the Eagles were still cruising along behind Paula Damas with a 4-2 lead. Aside from a few doubles in the second inning (resulting in two runs), Damas had been steady throughout her start only allowing two other hits.

The bottom of the fifth was the first sign of trouble for BU as its defense began to show some holes. In the fifth Damas allowed HNU two singles and the Biola defense committed two errors, resulting in three unearned runs and allowing the Hawks to take a 5-4 lead with just six outs left for the Biola bats to come back.

The Eagles would not need six outs to get the one run back, scoring in the top of the sixth when Tori Apodaca reached on a bunt, swiped a base and scored on a two-out Hailey Boyett RBI single.

With the game tied at five Head Coach Nikki Udria turned to game one winner Paige Austin to lock things down. The sophomore managed to get through a nerve-wracking sixth inning that saw the Hawks load the bases but fail to score. But, with the error and wild pitches ultimately suffered the tough loss in walk-off fashion in the seventh.

Biola ended with six hits with three of them coming from Missy Poti who was inserted into the starting lineup after sitting out game one. She was 3-for-4 with the two RBI from the first-inning hit.

The two teams combined for seven errors in the second contest after a clean one-error game one. The loss means that Biola now needs a doubleheader sweep on Sunday just to get back to even .500 on the season. The Eagles sit at 6-8 (1-3 PacWest). A noon doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday after the two teams let a rainstorm pass through on Saturday.

The games will once again be hosted at Cottrell Field at St. Mary's College.
