A Good Day For A W

Biola gets its first game in over a week and gets a win.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball showed no signs of rust but rather came out swinging in game one of Monday's doubleheader, despite the fact BU hadn't played a game in over a week. The Eagles scored four first-inning runs in support of a complete game shutout from Paige Austin as BU got a 4-0 win in the series-opener against Hawaii Pacific.

Austin walked the first two batters she faced to give Hawaii Pacific the first scoring chance of the game, but the sophomore was able to work her way out of the first inning with a pair of groundouts and a popup.

Biola flipped the script in its half of the first inning, having its first three batters reach base to set the table for senior Kayla Neff who plated two with a single to left field.

"Whenever I am up to bat my focus is on 'strong wrists, strong wrists' and that helps me stay on top of the ball," said Neff. "It was nice that my teammates ahead of me did their job and got on and I felt really confident that we would be able to hit this pitcher."

The Eagles managed two more later that inning when Kaile Chavez hit one to the HPU shortstop who couldn't make the play and Neff and Poti hustled around the base paths to come in and score, upping the lead to 4-0.

After that the game turned into a classic pitcher's dual with Biola managing only one more hit for the remainder of the game as HPU's starter leveled the boat and also went the distance in the circle.

Biola's only other legitimate scoring chance came in its half of the fifth inning when Jennifer Morinishi led off the inning with a hard-hit double off the base of the fence in left field.

Hawaii Pacific managed 12 base runners throughout the course of the game, but could not take advantage of the eight walks and one hit-by-pitch to force any runs across against Austin and her deadly rise ball.

The sophomore hurler ended up with seven strikeouts, six of them swinging as she locked down her fourth complete game effort of the 2019 season.

"I thought Paige did a great job with what she had to work with today," said catcher Neff. "Some of her pitches weren't working and the umpire had a small strike zone so we had to work with what we had and she did great."

Biola's top of the lineup was the most effective in game one, obviously providing the early offense in the first inning, but also seeing batters 1-2-3-4 each providing one of the Eagles' four hits.

The win pushes Biola to 7-8 on the season and 2-3 in PacWest play. The Sharks fell to 17-12 (11-4 PacWest) with the loss. The two teams play one more on Monday and two more on Tuesday.
