BIOLA (10-16, 8-12 PacWest) vs DOMINICAN (20-4, 17-3 PacWest): Thursday Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
Thursday night will be the final Chick-Fil-A Night of the winter sport season, with free chicken sandwiches available before both the men's and women's game courtesy of Chick-Fil-A at the La Habra Marketplace. The Penguins come to Southern California to conclude their regular season schedule with two games that are pivotal in determining their seeding in the PacWest Championship. The Penguins need a win to make sure they hold onto the No. 2 seed and a bye in the first round of the conference tournament that Dominican will host in San Rafael. The Penguins will face Biola on Thursday before ending their regular season at Azusa Pacific on Saturday while third-place Hawaii Pacific hosts eighth place Notre Dame de Namur in Honolulu on Saturday. Dominican comes to La Mirada with five-straight road wins and an incredible 8-1 record on the road this season. Led by Natalie Diaz' 26.4 points per game, which ranks second among all Division II women's basketball players in the country, the Penguins score 80 points per game and have scored at least 90 points in three of their last six games. The last time Dominican scored under 60 points, the Penguins made just four three pointers and scored just two points off the bench. But Dominican made 11 threes in their win against Biola at home on January 10. A rough first quarter was the main cause of the loss for the Eagles, but they bounced back to play the Penguins basically on even foot for the rest of the game. Dominican outscore Biola by just two points over the final 30 minutes.
BIOLA (9-14, 7-10 PacWest) vs ACADEMY OF ART (4-19, 3-17 PacWest): Saturday March 2 at 5:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
Saturday's game against the Urban Knights will be the Senior Night for Sara Dougan, Brenna Khaw and Jessica Shill. Both Khaw and Shill have been everyday starters for Head Coach Alan Nakamura this season and each set new career high points totals within the past two months. Khaw went off for 21 points at Chaminade on Jan. 31 after draining five threes while Shill shot 67 percent from the field for a career high 13 points on Jan. 13 against the same Academy of Art team the Eagles will play Saturday. Dougan will play the 99th game of her Biola career on Saturday and has been a key piece off the bench this season after returning from injury midway through the year. Dougan is tied for second on the team with 12 blocks this season and is also second in rebounds per game at 5.2. Academy of Art will play the reverse schedule of Dominican, facing Azusa Pacific on Thursday before coming to Biola on Saturday, and is 1-9 on the road this year. The Urbank Knights have three women averaging over 10 points per game. But they surrender almost 80 points a contest and Biola scored 82 points against them in the Eagles' Jan. 7 win.
WHAT'S AT STAKE: One of the leading hope for the Eagles here in the latter half of the season has been to finish in a position that would have qualified them for the PacWest tournament. This is the last year that Biola is ineligible for conference post season play since the University is scheduled to gain full NCAA membership status in 2019-20, making both basketball teams eligible for the PacWest tournament next year if they finish in the top-six of the conference. The Eagles have hovered in the top half of the conference standings all year and have multiple ways of earning a sixth-place finish this week. Biola can win out to earn the sixth-place finish outright or the Eagles can earn the sixth-place tiebreaker over Concordia with one Biola win and a Concordia loss in San Diego to a Point Loma team that has won 11-straight games. The second scenario would leave Biola and Concordia with identical PacWest records, but Biola would win the tiebreaker with better records against Dominican and/or Notre Dame de Namur and give itself a great launching point for next season's run.
