Close As Can Get

Biola suffers heartbreaking walk-off loss in battle at #9 CUI.

IRVINE, Calif. --- It was another nail-biter at Eagles Field in game two on Friday afternoon as No. 9 Concordia Irvine squeaked out a doubleheader sweep with a 5-4 walk-off win over Biola as the sun set in Southern California.

Megan Massa left the yard on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning, ending the game in a hurry. It was the lead-up to that play that was most interesting.

In the sixth inning, CUI got back-to-back singles to lead-off the frame and eventually scored the game-winner on an aggressive baserunning play following an out.

Andi Hormel gunned down the lead runner at home, but the trail runner came around to score when Biola attempted to catch the batter trying to move up to second base on the initial play at the plate.

That play eventually ended up scoring a run, recording an out and leaving the batter standing on third with just one out in the inning. Paula Damas, who was on in relief of Jennifer Morinishi, stepped up to record the last two outs and hold it at a one-run game but the damage was done.

After moving out in front, Concordia brought out the game-one winner Callie Nunes to attempt to lock down a save and extend her 26-inning scoreless streak.

Kayla Neff had other plans. Batting with two outs the count got to deuces wild with two balls and two strikes before the junior catcher left the yard to tie the game at four and send it to the decisive seventh inning.

In the seventh Concordia's Megan Massa left the yard on the first pitch of the inning to spoil the Eagles' comeback attempt.

Biola was seeing the ball well throughout the entire game, compiling 10 hits and scoring its first three runs on a two-out, three-run bomb by Hailey Boyett. It was her second big fly of the 2019 season and turned what was a 3-0 deficit upside down.

Unfortunately for Biola it could not overcome three unearned runs and dropped to 0-2 in PacWest Conference play. Concordia now has nine wins in a row and is 2-0 in conference.

It was a tough-luck loss for Damas who threw over four innings of really good softball in relief of the Eagles' starter, Morinishi. Damas held Concordia to four hits and just one earned run while not walking a single batter. Morinishi shifted to center field after coming out of the circle and had a fantastic game offensively. The freshman ended up with two of the Eagles' 10 hits.

Biola hosts Adelphi (N.Y.) for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.
