You can be sure that one of Biola's emphases during its preparation from Hilo is to be engaged from the opening tipoff. The Eagles dropped a tough 77-65 loss to the Vulcans in Hilo to end their Hawaii trip after Hawaii Hilo jumped out of the gate with an 18-0 run during the first six minutes of the game. The Eagles made it a close game in the fourth quarter, despite the fact that the Vulcans took a 20-point lead three minutes into the second half, thanks to great shooting from Tatum Brimley and Jazz Benn. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group drained their second-highest number of threes in one game with 13 against Hawaii Hilo while Benn's 20 second-half points complimented Brimley's career-high 22 points. But the Vulcans started the game 6-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first quarter and finished the contest with 11-straight makes from the free throw line to keep Biola at arms length. The Vulcans took advantage of the Eagles foul trouble by collecting 24 points at the free throw line during the teams first meeting, so it figures that the Eagles may be able to change the result in Tuesday's matchup if they're just able to clean up their defense. Three women fouled out for Biola in the loss to Hawaii Hilo and three others picked up at least three fouls. And speaking of it, foul trouble is one of the parts of the game that the Vulcans have to avoid at all costs. Due to injuries, UH Hilo only has eight players on its roster. But Allie Navarette is still able to carry the Vulcans were her average of 19.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Navarette scored 23 points and picked up 11 boards against Biola last time to start a streak of five-straight double-doubles for the sophomore forward.
BIOLA (9-14, 7-10 PacWest) vs CHAMINADE (5-16, 4-13 PacWest): Tuesday Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Eagles fared much better against Chaminade on January 31 when they improved to 2-0 against the Silverswords all-time with a 67-57 win. After the Eagles went just 1-for-11 from beyond the arc in the first half,
Brenna Khaw and her teammates went shot 6-of-10 from three in the second half and made 12 more free throws than the Silverswords to hold off Chaminade's late charge. Khaw basically played the best game of her career that night in Honolulled the Eagles with nine rebounds, four steals and set a new career-high with 21 points, 16 of which came in the second half. The Silverswords' leading scorer, Destiny Castro, still led her team with 17 points on Tuesday. But Biola prevented the rest of her teammates from also scoring in double figures while holding Chaminade to under 60 points. In contrast, three women besides Khaw also scored in double figures for the Eagles and it was the forwards who carried most of the weight in the first half.
Danita Estorga earned herself a lot of playing time in the game with 10 first-half points after coming off the bench.
Jazz Benn also added seven points of her own in the first 20 minutes to help Biola score 20 points in the paint over that span. Chaminade has lost three of four game since its last meeting with Biola and plays Azusa Pacific in Azusa on Tuesday night.
BIOLA (9-14, 7-10 PacWest) vs HAWAII PACIFIC (18-7, 16-3 PacWest): Tuesday Feb. 12 at 5:30 p.m. \\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Sharks have a lot riding on their final roadtrip of the year and will play their second-to-last game of the season against the Eagles on Saturday. After defeating Concordia 76-53 on Monday night, Hawaii Pacific is tied with Dominican for second place in the conference standings with a PacWest record of 16-3. At stake in a second-place finish is a bye in the first round of the PacWest tournament, which will be held at Dominican's home gym in San Rafael in March. The third place team after the next three games for the Sharks and Penguins will have to play the No. 6 seed, probably Concordia in the first round of the PacWest tournament. Hawaii Pacific defeated Biola 72-59 in Honolulu earlier this month despite the three-double figure scorers the Eagles had in the game. Breanna Mackenzie dropped 20 points for the Sharks on 8-of-14 shooting. But it was really the Sharks' defense that played the difference in the game, as Biola suffered 23 turnovers in the loss.
