Diaz Salvages Superbreaker

Ines Diaz picked up Biola’s only point against Cal State LA with a clutch 10-8 superbreaker win in singles.

LOS ANGELES --- Biola played some tough tennis on Monday against PacWest peer Cal State LA but saw the breaks that decided the dual-match points go against them.

The Golden Eagles clinched the match with two doubles wins and straight-set victories in singles to hand Biola its second loss of the year despite a win at No. 3 doubles from Anna Hartmann and Lily Waterhouse and gritty play at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights in singles.

"Overall I was very happy with three doubles and how we competed in the match. Number one doubles also had a lot of opportunities however we started out slow and that made the difference," said Head Coach David Goodman. "In singles Ines Diaz and Esther Lee played great. They were very competitive in their matches and I was happy to see Ines come through and win for us."

Hartmann and Waterhouse responded to Cal State LA's win at No. 2 doubles in short order with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position that made the No. 1 flight the rubber match. Esther Lee and Lauren Lee pulled within a game of their opponents at 5-4 after being down 5-2. But they ultimately dropped the highly contested point to the Golden Eagles after CSULA took the deuce point on its serve.

CSULA rattled off straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, which quickly turned eveyone's attention to Esther Lee and Diaz' matches. Lee jumped out to the early lead at the No. 1 match with a 6-4 win in the first set but eventually dropped the match in the superbreaker by a score of 10-4. Diaz had better luck after rolling to a 6-3 win in the second set of her match. The Spaniard won the first singles match of her collegiate career by taking the back-and-forth superbreaker by a score of 10-8.

The Eagles will return to the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday to host nearby Whittier College at 10 a.m.
