Weekly Notes for Biola Tennis from February 17 to February 23

Back At It

Biola Men's ad Women's Tennis both return to action with two matches this week.

February 18, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After rain wiped out their scheduled matches with Concordia at the end of last week, Biola Men's and Women's Tennis return to the courts for two matches a pieced this week. Head Coach David Goodman's women's group will travel to Cal State LA on Monday before playing at home on Saturday while the men will play two matches at home, with new-found rival Sonoma State coming to the Biola Tennis Center on Wednesday.

Both teams will host matches against nearby Whittier College on Saturday.

The weather forecast looks favorable for the Eagles to get both of their matches in on the week, which seems particularly crucial for a women's team that will have a nine-day layoff headed into Monday's match. Lauren Lee and the rest of her team will look to continue the momentum they created from their 1-1 start with more strong play from top to bottom this week. While the men will look to bounce back from a tough loss to Azusa Pacific last Monday.

BIOLA WT (1-1) at CAL STATE LA (2-1):  Monday, Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m.\\ No Live Coverage Available

WTEN: Cal State LA has been a perennial power in NCAA DII women's tennis thanks to the work of 25-year head coach Sandy Kreizel. Kreizel led the Golden Eagles to appearances in the national top 25 poll for six-straight seasons from 2012 to 2017 and announced near the end of 2018 that this season would be her last as a coach. Cal State LA has started the season with a 2-1 record and is coming of a 5-4 win at Pomona-Pitzer this past Saturday during which the Golden Eagles took points from the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions. Cal State LA has been a team that has succeed with its depth in 2019, as it has posted a 2-4 combined record at No. 1 and No. 2 singles but still hosts Biola with a winning team record because of sharp doubles play and tough matchups at No. 4 singles and below.

BIOLA MT (1-2) vs SONOMA STATE (1-1): Thursday Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. \\ Live Video \\ Live Stats

MTEN: The Eagles were one of the few teams that had Sonoma State's number in 2018, beating the Seawolves once at the BTC and once in the PacWest tournament during the fifth-place match. Other than those meetings, Sonoma State went 14-5 last season and has followed that up with a 1-1 record to begin the year. Like, Biola the Seawolves are just getting going, having lost 6-1 to NCAA DI Southern Utah before defeating a JC in American River College, 6-1. They'll play Santa Rosa JC at home on Monday before traveling to La Mirada for Thursday's matchup.

BIOLA vs WHITTIER COLLEGE: Saturday Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. & 12 p.m. \\ Live Video \\ Live Stats

WTEN: The Poets women's team has had a tough go in the month of February, losing their only two matches in the month by a score of 9-0 and 8-1. Their contest with Biola will be the Poets' first competition in 14 days.

MTEN: Whittier College will also come to the BTC with an official record of 1-1, though the Poets did suffer an 8-1 loss to Concordia in an exhibition on February 11. Available statistics on the Poets' website credit Jesse Eccles with personal victories in both of Whittier College's 8-1 losses this year, as Eccles came up with a win at No. 6 singles against Concordia and at No. 3 doubles against Pomona-Pitzer. That should set up an intriguing matchup with senior David Garcia on Saturday since Garcia customarily takes the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles positions for Biola.
