Eagles End Even In Tucson

Biola goes 3-3 in Tucson following 1-2 final day.

TUCSON, Ariz. --- Biola Softball ended its run of play at the 2019 Cactus Classic with an even 3-3 record after going 1-2 in some challenging games during Saturday's competition. The three contests were games 6-7-8 of the week for Head Coach Nikki Udria's team and their fourth, fifth and sixth in the last two days.

Biola dropped the opener, won the middle game and came up just short of a massive comeback in the third game to end their opening week with a 3-5 mark.

GAME 1 - Biola vs. Simon Fraser
Biola just could never get the bats going against the Clan, recording just six hits and zero extra-base hits in a 7-1 loss to their Canadian counterparts.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first with Jennifer Morinishi scampering around the bases to score a run before the first out was even made and things were looking promising. Unfortunately, after the first inning only one other base runner would reach second base or further for BU (Morinishi in the fifth).

Biola would be retired in order in the second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings while in contrast SFU scored runs in four of the six innings they had to bat.

The win helped Simon Fraser remain undefeated at 3-0 on the season.

GAME 2 - Biola vs. Saint Martin's
This game may just have been the Eagles' best outing of the 2019 season so far. BU rode a Paula Damas two-hit complete game shutout to a 4-0 win over the Saints.

Damas was absolutely brilliant throughout the outing, going all seven innings and inducing 14 groundouts en route to her first career shutout.

She limited Saint Martin's to a single in the third, a single in the fourth and one walk to face just three batters over the minimum. SMU came into the game averaging 5.4 runs-per-game. The Saints offense happened to score 12 runs and hit five homeruns in their very next game on Saturday. So to say Paula had a great day would be an understatement.

Damas needed to be locked in to go toe-to-toe with SMU's Lauren Maley who held Biola to three hits and no scoring through her first four innings of work. Maley began to crack right as she came out for the fifth and a Kylie Velasco leadoff walk and Kaile Chavez sacrifice fly allowed Biola to take the lead.

The fifth was the big inning for BU as the Eagles grew their lead from one to four with a little help from the Saint Martin's defense.

The Eagles got singles from Sicili Brittingham, Ruth Munoz and Missy Poti to load the bases with no one out. Then an error allowed Brittingham to score and a two-out Morinishi brought home two more runs to extend Biola to a 4-0 edge.

After that Damas needed six outs to clinch the win and she got them in order. In fact, she ended the game retiring 10-straight Saints hitters.

This win clinched at least a .500 record at the tournament for the Eagles as they added to a 2-1 record from Friday.

GAME 3 - Biola vs. Fort Lewis
This game was the wildest of the tournament for Biola as the two teams combined for 21 runs in an 11-10 Fort Lewis win.

The Skyhawks opened the scoring with a two-run homerun in the first inning and added another in the top of the second to set Biola behind the eight ball early at 3-0.

The Eagles got one of their own in the bottom of the second as Andi Hormel drove in Ruth Munoz with two outs after Munoz swiped a pair of bases. That tightened the game to 3-1, which is where it stayed for two more full innings as things began to look like a mini pitcher's duel through the end of the fourth.

That appearance would change rapidly in the fifth when both teams hung three runs on the board to make it a 6-4 contest. A Hormel leadoff double and a stretch of three-straight singles manufactured Biola's three runs to allow it right back in the game after FLC's solid top of the fifth.

Unfortunately for BU Fort Lewis scored four runs on four hits in the next half-inning to once again open a commanding lead, this time at 10-4.

Morinishi's third double of the season allowed BU to bring it back to halfway (10-5) before the game moved into a seventh as she drove in Kayla Neff for the Eagles' lone run of the sixth.

In the top half of the seventh, with Morinishi on in relief, Fort Lewis picked up what would later go down as the game's winning run when the Skyhawks' third baseman, Taylor Hollestelle, left the yard with a solo shot.

That big fly made it 11-5 and seemingly cut out any chance of a Biola comeback. Prior to this tournament the most runs Biola had scored in any one inning this season was four.

The Eagles bettered that number by one in their half of the seventh inning, bringing the game all the way back to 11-10 before stranding a runner on base with a fielder's choice final out.

The five-run inning was keyed by RBI hits from Hailey Boyett, Kiana Meriales and Tori Apodaca. Apodaca hit a two-out, two run single to reach base representing the game typing run. It was just her second hit of the season, but it sure was a big one.

The loss is a heartbreaking end to an excellent tournament run for Biola. The team will come back and regroup, taking a few days to rest and practice in advance of PacWest Conference season starting later this week.

The Eagles (3-5) take on the Concordia Irvine Eagles (4-1) in Irvine on Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Concordia Irvine won the conference last year and they and Biola were picked to finish 1-2 in the PacWest Conference preseason coaches' poll.
