Mavericks Make It Tough

Biola scratches out three runs but comes up short vs. #21 CMU.

TUCSON, Ariz. --- Biola Softball had its chance to face its first ranked opponent of the 2019 season on Friday night as it drew No. 21 Colorado Mesa in its third game of the day.

Mesa got off to a fast start with four runs in the first three innings before Biola could even scratch one run across, making it hard for BU to get back in the game. The Eagles competed to the very end, though, scoring twice in their half of the seventh to make the game very respectable despite a loss. The final score was 6-3.

Paige Austin got the start for Head Coach Nikki Udria after having to sit around all day waiting for the big bats of the Mavericks. A few control issues early on led to a pair of first inning runs for Colorado Mesa as Austin plunked the 2-3 hitters for CMU and they both came around to score.

An RBI double and bases-loaded single got the Maverics single runs in the second and third before Biola's offense was finally able to chip away a bit in their half of the third. Tori Apodaca led off the frame by getting hit by a pitch. She advanced on a successful sacrifice bunt and stole third before scoring on a Kayla Neff single.

With the score at 4-1 headed into the fourth, Udria elected to put game one starter Jennifer Morinishi into the circle to see what she could do in relief. Morinishi would end up going the final four innings, holding CMU to just four hits and two runs (both crossing the plate in the top of the sixth).

Biola was held to just one hit spread across their halves of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and went into their final at-bats staring at a five-run deficit.

Sicili Brittingham pinch-hit to lead off the inning and got her first double of the season. After an Andi Hormel walk and a CMU passed ball both runners were in scoring position as Morinishi came up to take her at-bat with two outs in the inning. The freshman delivered a double to drive in both runs and cut the gap to 6-3.

Unfortunately, she'd end up stranded at second and the game would come to a close with that as the final score. The loss drops Biola to 2-3 and helped the Mavericks continue their excellent start to the season at 6-1.

The Eagles are back at it with three more games on Saturday, beginning with a 9 a.m. PT tilt against Simon Fraser.
