Bounce In Their Step

Biola Women's Basketball starts PacWest play with two road games and on an encouraging four-game winning streak.

December 03, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- Biola Women's basketball couldn't ask for much more as its head into the start of PacWest play this Thursday. After last week's comeback victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Eagles will carry a four-game winning streak and back-to-back road victories into their trip to Belmont and San Rafael. They've also closed their last two games with strong fourth quarters, scoring 27 points at Hope International on November 23 and 24 against the Toros last Saturday to outscore those opponents by an average of 13 points over the final 10 minutes of each game.

Senior guard Jelissa Puckett stole the show with a career-high 16 points in Biola's most recent win, making every shot she took in the second half to help her team overcome a nine-point deficit at the half. Puckett was joined by six of her teammates who also scored seven points or more in the contest. Among that group was Stephanie Lee, who was named PacWest Freshman of the Week for the third time this season on Monday, and senior guards Tatum Brimley and Kayla Macedo, all three of whom finished with seven.

After this good stretch, Biola Women's Basketball ranks first in the conference in assists, steals and turnover margin. Danita Estorga leads the PacWest in free-throw percentage at 94.1 and three women have the second-most steals in the conference (13): Aysia Johnson, Lee and Puckett.

BIOLA (4-2) at Notre Dame de Namur (2-4): Thursday December 5 at 5:30 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
On paper, the Eagles have a good matchup against the Argos, who come into Thursday's clash without any women averaging 10 points per game and with a turnover tendency that Biola should be able to capitalize on for more steals. The Argos have shot the ball well from beyond the arc over the past four games, sinking 45 percent of their attempts. But NDNU finds itself in a two-game losing streak after it lost by 26 points this past Saturday to a Cal State East Bay team that it defeated 60-59 two weeks prior.

Notre Dame de Namur's offense runs through Cheyenne Jankulovksi, the team's leader in scoring, assists and steals. But Jankulovski is decidedly an inside scorer as she's only made one three-pointer through six games this season and leads the team with 23 turnovers. Her team is 0-3 all-time against Biola and was tied with Holy Names for the fewest points in the PacWest preseason poll that was released at the end of October.

Thursday's game will be played at Walter Gleason Gym on NDNU's campus. The Argos do not post ticketing information on their website.

BIOLA (4-2) at Dominican (3-3): Saturday December 7 at 5:30 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Penguins are still finding their identity after they lost the PacWest Player of the Year Natalie Diaz to graduation. Dominican is 3-3 and also comes into the week with a two-game losing streak against Cal State East Bay and Humboldt State. The Penguins have surrendered the most turnovers among PacWest teams and have a negative scoring margin this season. But are still receiving votes in the latest West Region poll and have three double figure scorers, including the conference's leading scorer Jerusha Paine, who averages 23.8 points per contest.

Poor shooting has really been Dominican's biggest issue over their short losing streak, as the Penguins shot under 40 percent in both losses. And scoring efficiency is crucial for DUC since they do not depend much at all on the three-pointer

The Eagles will be looking for their first win against the Penguins in Biola's NCAA Era and their first win ever in San Rafael. Saturday's game will be played at the Conlan Center and Dominican charges $5 for general admission to its basketball games.
