Weekly Notes for Women's Basketball from December 8 to December 14

Final Games Before Finals

Now receiving votes in the latest West Region poll, Biola Women’s Basketball plays two games before taking another break for final exams.

December 10, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- Biola Women's Basketball reached a new peak performance during Saturday's blowout win at Dominican and was so impressive that the Eagles received votes in the latest West Region poll that was released on Monday.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team made near 55 percent of its attempts from three-point range to match its NCAA-Era record with 17 three-pointers in the 84-53 win. The Eagles also scored 21 points or more in each of the first three quarters to take a 40-point lead into the final period and to eventually finish within two points of the Eagles' NCAA-Era for most points in a game.

Five women scored in double figures for Biola in that confidence building victory. Stephanie Lee was named PacWest Freshman of the Week yet again after making her first six three-point attempts and reaching 21 points in just three quarters. The combo of Jazz Benn and Aysia Johnson scored a total of 14 points in the first period to get the Eagles off to a good start. Then Tatum Brimley worked with Lee to carry the torch into halftime with a combined 7-for-9 shooting in the second quarter.

Brimley particularly will be a player to watch this week and particularly in Tuesday's matchup against Hawaii Hilo. She set new season-highs for field goals made (five) and points (13) to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals on Saturday. Brimley also set a career-high for points with 22 against the Vulcans on February 4, 2019

BIOLA (6-2, 2-0 PacWest) vs Hawaii Hilo (1-4, 0-2 PacWest): Thursday December 10 at 5:30 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Vulcans come to Chase Gym trying to halt their four-game losing skid that has gotten particularly difficult as they've faced PacWest So Cal pod opponents over the last two weeks. Hawaii Hilo has lost by an average of 27 points in its last two games to Azusa Pacific and Concordia and have really struggled to establish a presence in the painted area outside of All-PacWest post Allie Navarette. The last three opponents have all recorded 13 offensive rebounds or more against the Vulcans and APU and CUI turned that into 22 and 18 second-chance points in UH Hilo's last two games. In addition to surrendering a similar level of points in the paint, the Vulcans have gone into halftime down by 20 points or more each of the last two games. So the Eagles will need to be prepared for a type of adjustment from the Vulcans that will set them up for a fast start of the offensive end.

Coach Nakamura's group will definitely need to account for Navarette, who is due to shake off her recent scoring struggles over the past three games or so. The Torrance, California-native has only collected five field goals and 12 rebounds over her last two games. But she recorded a double-double in both meetings against Biola last season and averaged 18.5 points per game against the Eagles.

A win in this matchup for Biola would push the Eagles above .500 at home this season and would be BU's first all-time win against Hawaii Hilo.

BIOLA (6-2, 2-0 PacWest) at Point Loma (6-2, 2-0 PacWest): Saturday December 14 at 2:00 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video ($)
Saturday's matchup with the Sea Lions look very even before the week's action gets underway. Biola and Point Loma share four common opponents and are both 4-0 in those games. Each team also carries notable win streaks coming into the week as the Sea Lions have won five-straight before they face Hawaii Hilo on Thursday.

Point Loma had the reverse Nor Cal trip to the Eagles, playing a close game against the Dominican Penguins before having an easier time with Notre Dame de Namur. Grad transfer from Holy Names, Onjalise Carley-Hilliard, has been a big boost to PLNU's inside scoring and leads the team with 15.6 points per game. The Sea Lions also have three other women who average 10 points or more. But the stat that has correlated closest with PLNU's winning streak has been rebounding. Point Loma has pulled down 50 rebounds or more in each of its last five games and that has afforded the Sea Lions the luxury of scoring via high-volume shooting from inside the three-point arc. Point Loma averages over 63 field goal attempts per game.

The Eagles will be looking to improve to 3-2 against PLNU since joining the PacWest and for their second win in Golden Gymnasium. Point Loma offers the option to purchase advance tickets to Saturday's game online. The Sea Lions have designated section E as the visitors' section of Golden Gym and general admission is $10.
