Estorga Sets Career Mark

Danita Estorga scores a career-high 22 points and records five steals in a 78-71 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After posting a double-double in Friday's season opener, Danita Estorga took her game up another notch against Cal State Dominguez Hills with a career-high 22 points and five steals.

Numerous aspects of Estorga's play showed that the redshirt sophomore is set for the type of season Biola hopes for her is her second year on the floor. But Estorga's first big scoring night of the year came in a loss, as the visiting Toros held the Eagles off in the fourth quarter and won 78-71.

Following a first quarter that saw the Toros take a 16-to-9 lead, Biola played its best stretch of basketball in the second period with 28 points and a successful press defense. For a while during that stretch it seemed like the story of the game would be the coming out party for a few of Biola's freshmen who played key roles in creating a four-point lead for the Eagles at halftime.

Madi Chang, Stephanie Lee and Jaden Randall combined for 4-of-7 shooting during the period without committing any turnovers in the lead up to the break. Chang and Lee both made crucial three-pointers that built Biola's momentum. Lee also got three steals as her team forced 13 turnovers in the period from Cal State Dominguez Hills and benefited from a total of 33 turnovers in the contest.

Biola was riding particularly high as the teams went into halftime because Estorga converted both ends of an acrobatic four-point play just before the buzzer sounded. With just a sliver of space, Estorga heaved a desperation shot and hit the floor after the foul just as the ball baked off the window and into the basket for a three-point dagger.

The Eagles built their lead up to eight points twice in the third quarter with two-point baskets from Tatum Brimley and Jazz Benn. But the Toros bounced back to limit to just three-pointers on 18 attempts in the second half and outscored Biola 45-to-34 over the final 20 minutes. Jazz Benn scored seven of her nine points in the second half while Randall dropped in four of her six.

Estorga was joined in double figures by Tatum Brimley (10) and Stephanie Lee (12), who scored double digits for the first time in her collegiate career.

The Eagles will stay at Chase Gym for their next game, hosting Alaska Fairbanks on November 14 at 7 p.m.
