Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Late Run Falls Short

Biola Women’s Basketball scores 10 points in the last minute but cannot surpass Cal State LA in the season opener.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball came within a few fortunate breaks of an impressive comeback victory in its 2019-20 season opener against Cal State LA on Friday.

Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group was down by as many as 10 points midway through the fourth quarter. But the Eagles roared back with a flurry of three pointers and scored a total of 10 points in the last minute of play to force CSULA to sink free throws to secure a 72-67 victory.

Biola had to overcome a slow start to the first game of the season, as the Golden Eagles scored the first nine points to take the early lead. It only took a few minutes for BU to find its rhythm, though: Jazz Benn bookended a nice 9-2 run for her team with layups to make the score 9-11 in the first quarter. Then Benn would tie the game at 17-17 early in the second quarter after she became the third Eagle make a three-pointer in the game.

Freshmen Stephanie Lee and Madi Chang drained the first two threes for Biola and a total of six players from Nakamura's roster made a basket from long range on Friday.

Nine points from Benn and the two threes from the freshmen helped carry the Eagles into halftime with a 25-29 deficit. But the team really picked up the intensity in the second half despite the fact that Biola was not able to outscore its opponent until the fourth quarter.

Case and point for that intensity is the great boost in Danita Estorga's boxscore. In 15 second-half minutes, the redshirt sophomore recorded nine points and nine rebounds, including four offensive boards, after she started the second half with just two points and three rebounds. Estorga becomes the first Eagle this season to post a double-double while her team pulled down 13 offensive rebounds as a unit in the second half.

Aysia Johnson also had a good second half to begin her second year on the floor for Biola, scored eight points while delivering four assists and four boards as a substitute. She was not able to join Estorga in double digits, but Benn and Mikayla Greens both scored 10 points or more to give the scoring a jolt.

Biola's fourth-quarter run really became serious when senior Tatum Brimley made a clutch three-pointer that shrank the deficit to four points with under four minutes to play. She would pick up another point on a free throw with to keep the gap at four points with under two minutes to play before Estorga and Lee took over and drained the final 10 in the race to the finish.

The Eagles return to Chase Gym on Saturday to complete the CCAA/PacWest Crossover with a game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
