No. 1 Azusa Pacific’s defense and possession control the pace of play in a 3-0 win over Biola.

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer played Azusa Pacific in the third chapter of the Cornerstone Cup on Tuesday, taking on a No. 1 Cougars team that had won all 14 matches it had played on the year.

Biola played an adequate first half defensively, allowing just three shots on goal to the Cougars over the first 45 minutes while entering halftime just one goal down. But Azusa Pacific's defense and possession continued to dominate the match and held Biola at arms-length until the final whistle sounded on APU's 3-0 victory.

Even with the loss, Biola still has a .500 record against APU over the last four meetings (2-2) and a winning record in PacWest play at 4-2-2.

But Azusa Pacific would not let the Eagles get much going upfield on Tuesday night. Biola was only able to record one shot in the first half and four in the second as the Cougars repeatedly stopped the Eagles' attempts to combine. The bright spot in that for Head Coach Todd Elkins' group was that all five attempts came from underclassmen, and substitute Hann Kim led his team with two shots.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the 21st minute and had to wait until the 64th minute for their second goal, coming off a penalty kick awarded after a foul in the box. David Kwinn recorded his 10th goal of the season just nine minutes later to put the match out of reach and earn APU 10 more Cornerstone Cup points.

For his part, JD Gunn made seven saves on the night as the Cougars collected 10 shots on goal and 24 in total. Seven is the highest number of saves Biola's keeper has made in match since Gunn made eight stops against Cal State LA on September 21.

Azusa Pacific now leads 25-to-20 in the Cornerstone Cup standings after Biola began the day with a 20-to-5 advantage.

The Eagles will return to action quickly, heading back out on the road Thursday to face Concordia in Irvine at 2:30 p.m.
