A Win Worth The Wait

Swim & Dive has waited a long time to pass up Azusa Pacific. The wait is OVER.

November 02, 2019

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Swim & Dive spoiled Azusa Pacific's senior day and completed it's domination of the two-day head-to-head dual to earn a 194.5-176.5 win over the Eagles' biggest rivals.

Day two featured a pair of relays, pair of distance events and a lot of nail-biting as Biola completed its win over APU and set the stage for Biola earning some Cornerstone Cup points for the first time ever at this year's Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference championships.

Last season Biola lost by five points to Azusa Pacific. Two seasons ago the margin was a staggering 86 points. The Eagles have never beaten APU at the PCSC meet. This meet was so important to Head Coach Ryan Kauth as a springboard to show his Eagles what they're capable of in this exciting new era of Biola Swim & Dive

Day one saw Biola win all but one of the individual events. Day two was a bit more nerve-racking for the Eagles as Azusa Pacific managed wins in six of the nine total events swam.

The day began on a very high note, with the Eagles earning a win in the 200-medley relay (1:53.48) and second, third and fifth in the 1,650-freestyle to keep APU at arm's length. Kellyn Hayes led the effort for BU in the 1,650 with a 18:44.54. She also placed second in Friday's 1,000-yard race and earned top-3 in today's 500-freestyle (5:18.85).

The 100-butterfly also went to APU, but only by the slimmest of margins. Faith McAllister led the way for Biola with a 1:00.79, trailing only Sydney Benveniste's 1:00.32.

The Eagles' first individual event win came in the 200-breaststroke. Anna Haaksma dominated the event, winning by almost three full seconds with a 2:30.82. Celine Dong and Meredyth Rubie gave Biola three finishers in the top-4.

The 500-freestyle was the most exciting finish on the day, surprisingly. Biola freshman Kolya Vos and APU sophomore Tessie Scavone were hurdling towards the touch pads neck-and-neck with Scavone stealing the race with a 5:16.38 to Vos' 5:16.44.

Biola would take two of the top-3 spots in each of the last two individual events (200-backstroke, 200-IM). Liza Parahnevich won the 200-IM by a long way with her 2:09.02. Those strong finishes left no doubt about Biola's ability to win the meet headed into the final relay.

The relay was exciting all the same, with the Eagles' 'A' team and APU's 'A' team duking it out even until the final 25 yards of the 400-freestyle relay. Ultimately the Cougars won the memorable final event with a 3:40.87. Biola's group of swimmers went 3:41.71.

Next up for Biola is next Saturday's SOKA Invitational. Then the team gets almost a whole month off until the important fall finale, the La Verne Collegiate Winter Invitational.
