Biola Becomes Top-3 Team

Biola Men’s Soccer defeats Chaminade for the first time in program history, moving into third in the PacWest.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola Eagles checked off a lot of boxes with Thursday's 1-0 win over Chaminade.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' team finally gets its first all-time win over the Silverswords after Chaminade eked out 1-0 victories in the previous two meetings. The Eagles moved above .500 overall and assured themselves a winning record at home with their fifth win at Al Barbour Field in 2019. And perhaps most important, Biola took over sole possession of third place in the PacWest table with 14 points.

Biola (6-5-3, 4-1-2 PacWest) move two points ahead of Chaminade (4-3 PacWest) and Concordia (4-2 PacWest) after plugging away in the attack long enough for Jack MacDonald to score his fourth goal of the season and second in as many matches in the 79th minute.

Although the match felt much closer because of Chaminade's ability to counterattack with speed, the box score indicates that Biola had an iron grip over the match in the first have with 10 shots and 8 corner kicks created. Michael Stafford's acrobatics in goal for the 'Swords kept his team in a scoreless draw headed into halftime and frustrated midfielder Oscar Rubalcava to no end because of the saves Stafford made on several great shots from the Clovis-native.

Rubalcava would end the match as Biola's leader in shots (6) and shots on goal (3).

But there was nothing Stafford could do about MacDonald's strike from the penalty area that beat the keeper to the far left post. The pace of the match had really started to plod along until MacDonald sent his bench roaring because the teams combined four eight foul whistles in the second half up to that point. But MacDonald simply took things into his own hand, dribbling past two defenders to create the space he needed to shoot with his left foot and take the lead.

Biola played very smart in defense over the final 20 minutes to limit the danger around goal and hold the visiting team at arm's length. The Eagles conceded three corner kicks over the final 20 minutes, but the Silverswords only took one shot, a slow header from Micah Mokuelua that was saved by JD Gunn.

Gunn earns his sixth clean sheet in 13 matches this season with a save in each half on Thursday. Biola gets the weekend off but heads to Azusa on Tuesday for a Cornerstone Cup battle with Azusa Pacific beginning at 7:30 p.m.
