Gunn Earns His Keep

JD Gunn made a number of spectacular saves in the second half to help Biola hold onto a 1-0 shutout.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- You can call this JD Gunn's coming out party if you want. The freshman goalkeeper already won PacWest Freshman of the Week to open the season and had two shutouts coming into Saturday's match with Notre Dame de Namur. But the Wheaton Academy-alumni took his play to the next level in the Eagles 1-0 win over the Argos.

Gunn made a number of diving denials among his four second-half saves and robbed a few more passes out of the air to keep the visiting team out of the net and earn his third-consecutive clean sheet. He becomes the first Biola Men's Soccer goalkeeper to post three-straight shutouts since JT Addington recorded five in a row to conclude the 2013 regular season for the Eagles.

Head Coach Todd Elkins' group remains undefeated in PacWest play at 2-0-2 in conference and moves to .500 overall at 4-4-3. Notre Dame de Namur fall to 0-5 on the road and 1-5 in PacWest play after the Argos were unable to match Leo Thompson's early goal.

Thompson helped the Eagles return to the early scoring that had been so pivotal in their recent attacking success with his goal in the third minute. After Hunter Finnegan's boot forward was initially handed by the NDNU centerback, Thompson pounced on the ball when the defender misplayed it and lined it past the keeper for the goal.

Thompson's fourth goal of his season is the most on the team through 11 matches and continues the Englishmen's pattern of scoring every other match dating back to Biola's September 21st match at Cal State LA.

The Eagles would produce three more shots and a corner kick over the next 11 minutes. But they had no additional offensive statistics for the rest of the half as play noticeably began to slow and become more physical. For their part, the Argos had zero shots on goal in the first half and didn't force Gunn to make a save until the 60th minute of the match.

All three of Gunn's spectacular saves came in a five-minute span beginning in the 72nd minute as Notre Dame de Namur made a push to find an equalizer. Biola has now won the last two meetings at Al Barbour Field with the Argos after the Eagles also won 1-0 in 2017 after scoring a first-half goal.

Biola will have a full week before its next match. The Eagles will host Hawaii Hilo on October 26 at 7 p.m.
