Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

A Rough Finish

The visiting Hawaii Hilo Vulcans score the last two goals of the match to defeat Biola Men’s Soccer, 2-1.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Saturday's PacWest men's soccer match between the Biola eagles and Hawaii Hilo Vulcans was filled to the brim with physicality and counterpunching attacks. The teams combined for 22 shots in the first half alone while they basically split possession right down the middle, 51 percent for the Eagles and 49 for the Vulcans.

But the goals wouldn't come until the second half, where Biola would take the initial 1-0 after a Oscar Rubalcava scored his first goal of the season in the 52nd minute. But the visiting Vulcans scored the final two goals of the match, including a go-ahead header off a corner in the 89th minute, to earn Hawaii Hilo's first victory ever against Biola.

The Eagles are now 2-1-2 in PacWest play after losing for the first time in over three weeks. Hawaii Hilo picks up its second conference win and now has six points in PacWest play.

Biola did everything it needed to in the closing 10 minutes to respond to the Vulcans' goal and pull ahead 2-1. Like Jack Kilgallon's leading pass into the penalty area for Rubalcava's goal, the Eagles found both Rubalcava and Kilgallon in the box for wide open shots that both men blasted. Unfortunately, Hawaii Hilo goalkeeper Michael Harre made spectacular leaping saves on both shots to push them over the crossbar to keep his team in the match.

The home team would finish the match with a total of 25 shots, the Eagles' most shots since their second-to-last match of the 2018 season, and 10 corner kicks. But it would be the set pieces that would life Biola's opponents instead, as Hawaii Hilo scored on a direct kick in the 73rd minute and the aforementioned corner for the game-winner.

Leo Thompson and Rubalcava tied for the team-lead with five shots as each man played over 70 minutes in the contest. Eleven of the Eagles' shots came from within the 18-yard area compared to just seven for Hawaii Hilo.

The Eagles' chance to get back in the win column comes very soon. Biola hosts Hawaii Pacific at Al Barbour Field on Monday October 28 at 7 p.m.
