Overtime Leaves Eagles Wanting

Biola Men's Soccer works to a scoreless draw with Academy of Art in double overtime.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Eagles played a knock-down, drag-out match at Al Barbour Field against Academy of Art on Thursday. Even without a shot-on-goal, Biola created a lot of excitement with long shots and chances in the box that just couldn't seem to find the net. And finally after 42 fouls, six cautions and 110 minutes, the Eagles and Urban Knights had to settle for a point each with a scoreless draw.

It is Biola's third tie of the year as Head Coach Todd Elkins' group remains undefeated in conference at 1-0-2 PacWest. In contrast, the draw is the first PacWest points for Academy of Art, who started conference play 0-3.

The home team had their share of chances throughout the match, winning the shot advantage 9-to-6 and hitting both the right post and crossbar in the most dangerous chances for a goal. Jake Munivez had a go from the top of the box in the eighth minute than clanged off the crossbar, while Jack MacDonald's deflected shot in the 72nd minute ricocheted off the right post and back into the hands of keeper Davis King.

JD Gunn had to make three saves for the Eagles and made two big stops in crunch time. After Biola was called for a handball in the 60th minute, Gunn made a big save to his right on the direct kick from short distance. Then he would come off his line to meet and stop a breakaway shot from ART U's Zak Kiser in the 105th minute to prevent the visitors from stealing a golden goal at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles thought that they had themselves a game-winner with 30 seconds left in the first overtime, as Alex Lugo's service from near the centerline sailed over the scrum and into the net to send Biola into celebration. But after conferring with his sideline official, the center referee disallowed the goal because the Eagles had fouled the Urban Knights goalkeeper.

Even with the tie, Gunn will carry back-to-back clean sheets into Saturday's match with Notre Dame de Namur. This is the first time a Biola keeper has earned two-straight shutouts since Igor Puglia had shutouts on October 18 and 22, 2016.

The Eagles are scheduled to kickoff with the Argos at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
