ABOUT LAST WEEK: This Cornerstone Cup matchup felt a whole lot closer than the last time Biola and Azusa Pacific met. It still ended with a disappointing loss, but the team held close to the Cougars for most of the final 30 minutes of the game, dealing well with a team that was shooting the ball extremely well from all over the court.
Alex Talma continues to be the hot hand for Biola. He had an excellent night, scoring 19 points and pulling down eight rebounds in helping BU outscore Azusa Pacific 46-41 in the second half. He,
Alex Wright and
Trevor Treinen all played 33 or more minutes in the tight rivalry battle, helping the Eagles shoot 48 percent and keep the rebounding numbers close. At the end of the day, extra possessions caused by Biola's 21 team fouls and APU's prowess beyond the arc helped the hosts to the season series sweep.

Biola has dominated the all-time series against these Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, leading the way with 62 wins and just 27 losses. However, Biola is still seeking its first NCAA Division II victory over FPU as the Sunbirds earned an 85-71 victory in the two teams' only meeting last season. Senior guard Jake Straughan torched Biola for 23 points in last year's meeting. He was the team's leading scorer a year ago, but this year is averaging just 3.5 points-per-game and has only appeared in six contests. The other leading scorer from FPU's surprise win last season was Sam Burt, who's since moved on from FPU. Burt had 21 in the game. Biola was outrebounded by nine and made five fewer threes than the Sunbirds, which contributed to the 14-point loss.
Trevor Treinen led Biola in scoring with 16 points, followed by 13 from
Levi Auble and 11 from
Michael Bagatourian.
Christian Carroll had a chance to put in 22 minutes in the game and went 3-of-4 from the field to score eight points, his fifth-best game of 17-18. This year, Biola comes into this matchup fresh of back-to-back losses (HNU, APU). FPU has won two straight (DUC, NDNU), but has to face Azusa Pacific at the Felix Event Center on Thursday before making the trip to La Mirada Saturday night. The Sunbirds' last game was a narrow 61-57 win over the 0-17 NDNU Argos. FPU shot 55 percent from the field but made just four three-point shots in the game and turned the ball over 18 times, allowing the Argos to keep it close. Fresno Pacific makes just 5.6 three-pointers per game, which is the fourth-lowest mark in the conference. Biola is one of the three teams lower, making just five three-pointers a game. Don't expect either team to light it up from deep on Saturday. Sophomore forward Aamondae Coleman and sophomore guard Adrian Antunez will be the ones to watch for the visiting Sunbirds this go around. Both average double-digits for the season and Antunez has six-straight double-digit efforts coming into this week.
FAMILIAR FOE:Â Fresno Pacific is the only other school
Dr. Dave Holmquist ever coached at before coming back to Biola where he's been for parts of five decades. He coached the Vikings for three years in the 1970s, going 36-43 while also serving as administrator of the FPU athletic department.Â
YEAR 39: Dr. Dave Holmquist just keeps humming along. He's in his 39th season coaching his alma mater and is holding steady in fifth place in the all-time wins list among four-year college men's basketball coaches. Holmquist's 967 wins are third-most among active college coaches, only falling behind Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,100) and Herb Magee of NCAA Division II Jefferson University (1,074). Holmquist has averaged 22.8 wins-per-season, including his three years at Fresno Pacific when he first got started in the mid-1970s. This year he's on pace to help the Eagles get 16 (16-14) and end with 974.
MR. 1,300?: Trevor Treinen eclipsed 1,000 career points in his last game last season. The four-year senior comes into this week up to 1,244 points after a productive preseason and strong first half of conference play. He's averaged 334 points-per-season over his last three years, with a career-best 442 points last year. If he can get around 375 this season, he could move into the top-10 all-time among Biola Men's Basketball players. He's currently on pace for around 397 points this season. The current No. 10 is Bryan Weakley (1998-02) at 1,322. The highest spot he could likely reach would be seventh. He'd need 417 points to pass Roger Poppen (1960-63) for that spot. The senior is on a bit of a hot streak as of late, upping his season ppg by a full two points with his efforts over the last seven games. That includes his first two 20-point performances of the season during this last road trip. Treinen is also near the top of the Biola record books in three-pointers made. He comes into this season with 148 through his first three seasons, eighth all-time. He's within 50 of passing Marcus White, Dakari Archer, Nate Rakestraw, Pierre Zook and Doug Newby to move into third all-time behind Weakley (236) and Danny Campbell (203).
NEXT WEEK: at Chaminade (14-3, 8-3 PacWest) - Thursday Jan. 31 at 10:30 p.m. PT;
